The Second Annual LUNG FORCE Walk Buffalo presented by BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York was attended yesterday, May 30, 2019, by over 250 people. The 2 mile walk around Buffalo Harbor State Park aims to raise $60,000 and will continue to collect funds through June. The welcome program included local LUNG FORCE Heroes, survivors, advocates and families.
“The Western New York community has been incredibly receptive and supportive of the American Lung Association – and continues to turns out to help us raise awareness for lung cancer,” said Justin King, Executive Director for the American Lung Association in Western New York. “1 in 17 American women will get lung cancer in her lifetime – and we know that those are not just statistics in this community – they are our friends, family, coworkers and neighbors. This event helps us reach hundreds of local families and educate them about risk and early detection, which can save lives.”
The family friendly event featured educational “Mission Tents,” food trucks, music, children’s activities and fun for the whole family. BlueCross BlueShield’s Healthy Zone Cruiser was also onsite, offering games and activities for walk participants and their families.
"BlueCross BlueShield is proud to support the American Lung Association," said Bob Ruocco, Vice President, Chief Information Officer. "I lost my mother to lung cancer 30 years ago, so this issue is close to my heart. I am committed to doing my part to help find a cure, and look forward to leading BlueCross BlueShield's Fearless Force team as we walk to defeat lung disease and cancer." Ruocco is a Lancaster, New York resident and volunteers as the LUNG FORCE Walk Cabinet Committee Chair and is a member of the American Lung Association’s Local Leadership Board.
Today, lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of both men and women in the United States. 1 in 17 American women will get lung cancer in her lifetime and half of all women diagnosed with lung cancer will not even survive one year. The LUNG FORCE walk Buffalo is part of the national LUNG FORCE campaign, which raises funds for research, early detection, advocacy, education and awareness for lung cancer, particularly awareness about the high rate of lung cancer in women.
