October is National Lung Health Month and a local school is participating in a new initiative where children will learn about lung health and breathing through a fun yoga fitness class while raising funds to benefit the mission of the American Lung Association in Oklahoma. Shedeck Elementary in Yukon, Oklahoma will start the Yoga Power program on October 14.

Yoga Power is a new school-based fundraising initiative with a three-pronged approach -- education, physical activity and fundraising.  It is a fun way for children to support the fight against lung disease and to help promote healthy lungs. Weekly Lessen plans include engaging themes like Dr. Seuss, Around the World and a Garden theme.

“We are so excited to work with local schools to bring them this great educational program. By practicing yoga, children learn how to exercise, discover the power of their breath, develop confidence and strengthen the mind-body connection,” said Terri Bailey, Executive Director of the Lung Association. “Children enjoy amazing benefits from yoga both physically and mentally. Yoga Power includes education around the importance of proper lung health and will teach healthy breathing practices to every child.”

Additionally, the Yoga Power program teaches the value of community service; by collecting donations, children raise awareness and vital funding to help those who are suffering from lung diseases such as asthma, lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The participants also earn incentives -- they receive a wristband for registering, a keychain for their first $5 donation and much more.
