Letter to the Editor

(December 17, 2018) -

The American Lung Association in Pennsylvania applauds Governor Tom Wolf for condemning the recent ruling by a Texas federal judge that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is unconstitutional, and for his continued leadership to protect healthcare for millions in the commonwealth.

In Pennsylvania 10,470 people were estimated to be diagnosed with lung cancer and 7,280 will succumb to the deadly disease in 2018, according to the Lung Association’s “State of Lung Cancer” report. Additionally, more than 1.7 million Pennsylvanians have chronic lung disease such as asthma or COPD.

The American Lung Association and other leading patient advocacy groups denounced the ruling, which could eliminate critical protections for people with pre-existing conditions and minimum insurance standards known as essential health benefits.

The American Lung Association is pushing back against this ruling to ensure all American have access to quality and affordable healthcare, however it’s important for people to understand that the current law remains in place pending appeal. That means patients who have purchased healthcare for 2019 from will remain covered and the millions of Americans who have coverage through Medicaid expansion will also remain covered.
