Des Moines, IA - More than 200,000 Americans this year will be diagnosed with lung cancer, and half of them will die.

That’s why the American Lung Association in Iowa is hosting the 2017 LUNG FORCE Expo, to save lives. The event will feature the latest trends, resources and research on lung health for patients and professionals. It will take place at the Sheraton West Des Moines on May 12, 2017.

More than one hundred people living with lung disease and professionals from Iowa, Northern Missouri, and Eastern Nebraska will gather to watch speakers from a variety of fields present the latest medical based research on lung disease.

Populations at risk for lung cancer will be a main topic of discussion with a presentation by Dr. Jason Mohr, a board certified pulmonary and critical care physician, from The Iowa Clinic, 2017 Turquoise-Presenting Sponsor of the Expo.

Professionals can choose between two sets of workshops focusing on lung disease or lung cancer. One of the sessions will focus on pulmonary fibrosis, led by Angela D. Beckel, DNP, ARNP, FNP-C at Chest, Infectious Disease & Critical Care Associates.

“There are many challenges to diagnosing pulmonary fibrosis and management of the condition, including FDA approved pharmaceutical treatment options,” she explains.

The patient and caregiver educational track includes information on lung disease, lung cancer, palliative care, and home oxygen. Shannon Benson, RN, MSN from IORA will discuss clinical trials.

“Clinical trials are a critical part of the research process. The more people who participate, the faster critical research questions can be answered, leading to better treatment and prevention options for all cancers,” she said.

Physicians and Lung Association representatives will be available for media interviews. Media representatives receive complimentary admission and can RSVP by sending their contact information to [email protected]. Professional registration is $100 through May 5th. Patient scholarships are also available. Registration is open online at or by calling 402-502-4950.
