For the 11th consecutive year, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has committed to Presenting Sponsorship support of the annual American Lung Association in Wisconsin Fight for Air Climb. Anthem’s involvement has continued to grow since the inaugural Climb in 2009 and is expected to top $500,000 in total sponsorship and team fundraising with this year’s event. Anthem’s participation has helped make the Milwaukee Climb the #1 Fight for Air Climb in the nation.
“Anthem has been at the heart of the Milwaukee Climb since day one,” said Megan Cordova, Executive Director of the American Lung Association in Wisconsin. “They are a great partner and so committed to health and wellness, which is at the heart of the Lung Association’s mission. We are so privileged to work with them.”
“The Climb is a truly special event, both a fun-filled fundraiser and a physical challenge like no other in Wisconsin,” said Paul Nobile, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Wisconsin. “In fact, it’s like no other in the U.S. because this is the country’s largest Fight For Air Climb and our ALA team puts a uniquely Milwaukee spin on it. It’s a joy watching the Climb grow every year as we work together to improve lung health.”
The goal for this year’s Climb is $750,000, to be raised through both corporate sponsorships and individual fundraising. The 2018 Milwaukee Climb reached yet another new national milestone, raising $746,000.
The Lung Association offers Climbers many tips and ideas for reaching the fundraising goal.
All Climbers pay a registration fee of $25 and then raise an additional $100 through fundraising activities. Early Bird registration is $15 and ends on Friday, January 11 at midnight.
Anthem’s support of the Lung Association mission has spanned several decades and extends well beyond the Climb sponsorship. As early as the 1990s, the company supported the “Smoke Free Class of 2000,” a peer-education program with a goal of establishing a 100 percent smoke free graduating class of seniors by the year 2000. While that was not achieved, that and numerous other efforts have had a dramatic impact on reducing youth smoking rates to its present low of 8.4 percent.
More recently, Anthem has repeatedly funded the Lung Association’s efforts to help adults quit smoking through the Freedom From Smoking® program. In 2018, in anticipating of the smoke free housing rule issued by the federal office of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Anthem made it possible for the Lung Association to offer FREE smoking cessation support to thousands of low-income Public Housing residents in 14 states, including Wisconsin,
The 2019 Climb takes place on March 9 at the US Bank Center in downtown Milwaukee. Registration and information are available at www.fightforairclimb.org/Milwaukee or by calling 262-703-4200.
