Today, Schnuck Markets, Inc. announced that they will end the sale of all tobacco products by the end of the year. In response to the announcement, Brett Schuette, the executive director for the American Lung Association in Missouri, issued the following statement:
"The American Lung Association is committed to ending the tobacco and e-cigarette epidemic in the U.S. We applaud all retailers that end the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products in their stores. Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in Missouri, killing more than 10,000 residents each year.
“We celebrate the bold decision of Schnucks to remove tobacco. Their example fosters a culture that discourages tobacco use and addresses its health impacts. We hope it will also encourage all retailers, especially those with pharmacies, to consider ending tobacco sales.”
