Protect Our Children and Grandchildren: Don't Roll Back the Clean Power Plan
Dear Administrator Pruitt:
We write to you as parents and grandparents to support protecting the health and safety of children. Safeguarding our children and grandchildren is paramount to us. We urge you not to repeal the Clean Power Plan, which provides lifesaving air pollution reductions, including the first federal limits on carbon pollution from power plants.
Power plants emit pollutants that threaten everyone’s health, but children are particularly vulnerable. Power plants are one of the largest sources of carbon pollution in the nation, which drives climate change. Climate change leads to warmer temperatures and wildfires, increasing smog formation and particle pollution that cause asthma attacks and early death. Curbing power plant pollution will save lives.
The Clean Power Plan would reduce air pollution that puts our children and grandchildren at risk.
Even before they are born, air pollution may harm children’s health. Research warns that air pollution can increase the risk of preterm birth. And growing up breathing high levels of air pollution may affect how children's lungs function, putting them at greater risk of lung disease as they age. Children's lungs aren't fully grown until they become adults. In addition, they are often more active when they are outdoors, so they may inhale more pollution.
EPA's analysis shows that the Clean Power Plan will prevent 90,000 asthma attacks in children and up to 4,500 premature deaths every year by 2030.
We urge you to prioritize the health of our children and grandchildren and protect the lifesaving Clean Power Plan.
