Educating Patients and Providers through LUNG FORCE Expos

EXPO patient at registration

It is a fact that more people die of lung cancer than from breast, prostate, colon, and pancreatic cancers combined. That’s why the American Lung Association of the Southeast proudly provided five LUNG FORCE Expos throughout our region during fiscal year 2016. Hundreds of health care professionals, patients and families came together to learn about new research, treatment options and patient resources, and had the opportunity to join the American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE community.

LUNG FORCE is an American Lung Association movement designed to bring awareness and foster empowerment around the issues of women’s lung health and lung cancer. One key part of the LUNG FORCE movement involves bringing together patients, caregivers, and health care professionals, through LUNG FORCE Expos, to learn more about the latest trends and research surrounding lung cancer, COPD, asthma, and other lung diseases. We seek to provide attendees with knowledge, resources, and networking opportunities in order to improve patient health and grow the support system of those suffering from lung disease.

At LUNG FORCE Expos, speakers from a variety of fields presented the latest information on lung disease. Topics for professionals ran the gamut; from new lung cancer screening guidelines, to how to help people quit smoking, to the important role of clinical trials. Patients also learned about: life after pulmonary rehab; how to be a smart patient and how to be your own best advocate; how to cope with depression after being diagnosed with lung disease; understanding medical tests and more.

During fiscal year 2016, the American Lung Association of the Southeast reached a total of 243 health professionals and 173 patients and caregivers. Events were held in Atlanta, Jackson, Miss., and Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, and Jacksonville in Florida. Additionally, a total of 246 other event attendees were reached through LUNG FORCE Expos including volunteers, media, speakers, and exhibitors. The participants in our LUNG FORCE Expos agreed that the information presented was important and incredibly useful. Patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals enjoyed meeting and sharing experiences with others, as well as learning about new medications, treatments and lung cancer screenings.

Some of the reviews from patients included:

“Thank you so much for a lovely, informative day. I learned things about my condition that I did not know and reinforced things I did know. I really appreciate you and your staff helping me with the oxygen tanks … I definitely want to be put on the mailing list for next year…” - Robin S. - Atlanta

“I was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1999 and they told me I had a zero percent chance of surviving five years…. I am living proof that educating myself about my disease is vital to survival. The LUNG FORCE Expo featured such amazing speakers, starting with the opening doctor and going on through the day, that I came away with new information and even more determined to rally the world to defeat lung cancer.” — Kathleen S. – Orlando, Fla.
