Intern, Health Promotions (NV #1920-50)

The American Lung Association has a great opportunity for a Intern, Health Promotions to join our incredible team in our Las Vegas, NV office. Working alongside members of the Health Promotions & Education Team, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission:  to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education, and advocacy.

In this role, the intern will assist the American Lung Association Manager, Health Promotions to execute planning and implementation of core program activities to gain experience in the field of public health.

Projects:

This is a great opportunity for the intern to enhance their skills in organization, multi-tasking and communications.  The intern can expect to develop confidence and marketable skills by engaging in or assisting with many of the following activities:

  • Gain a basic understanding of the American Lung Association
    • Become knowledgeable of mission, development, and communications efforts.
    • Gain technical training by utilizing American Lung Association training sites (Lung.org and LungNet).
    • Participate in staff meetings and learning opportunities.
  • Community Outreach and Education
    • Obtain a better understanding of the American Lung Association in Nevada and our role in the Las Vegas area including, but not limited to attending all staff meetings, shadowing staff in the field, attending program specific meetings, attending trainings and local events, etc.
    • Assist with the department specific projects in Environmental Health, Health Promotion, Community Health, or Assessment.
    • Assist with the collection and analysis of data.
    • Promote and support current American Lung Association in Nevada activities; with a special emphasis on the 2020 LUNG FORCE Expo.
    • Build and maintain good relationships with community partners.
    • Coordinate and conduct outreach efforts for public health programs.
    • Design effective written materials

Learning Outcomes:

  • Gain a basic understanding of public health in action.
  • Learn more about non-profit structure, including mission, development, and communications efforts.
  • Acquire an understanding of the health problem(s) addressed by the American Lung Association.
  • Learn skills in establishing and maintaining relationships with staff, partners and clients, including persons of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Gain experience in assessing the public health needs of the community.
  • Gain experience in developing public health programs that are based on sound principles.
  • Gain experience in the evaluation of public health programs.
  • Learn about current and potential sources of funding to support public health
  • Assist in the development of funding applications
  • Learn about team building and collaborating with staff.
  • Learn to cultivate relationships outside the office while in the community setting.
  • Learn how to communicate in a professional setting.

TYPE OF INTERNSHIP

Before internship begins, documentation from the school may be required stating that this internship opportunity is eligible for academic credits.

This is an unpaid internship position requiring a minimum time commitment of 8-10 hours per week (flexible schedule) and must be eligible for course credit.   This position will be starting in/or about (Spring Semester 2020 and will end on/or about the end of the Summer or Fall semester 2020).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be working towards a Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in non-profit management, public health, health education, or related field
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA
  • Basic knowledge of public health or health promotion
  • Qualified candidates must be enthusiastic, reliable, and interested in developing a career in public health, health education, or non-profit management
  • Qualified candidates should possess strong writing skills, attention to detail, and have a keen interest in the mission of the American Lung Association
  • Ability to multitask, perform in a team environment, and a demonstrated willingness to learn
  • Ability to work independently
  • Computer Proficiency – Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs. (supplies)
  • Reliable transportation
