The American Lung Association has a great opportunity for a National Specialist, Digital Content Writer to join our incredible team in the Chicago, IL.  Working as a member of the Marketing and Communications, Team you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission:  to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education, and advocacy. 

In this role, you will collaborate with the digital staff, communications team and subject matter experts to write, edit and publish engaging content to Lung Association websites with a focus on user experience (UX) and search engine optimization (SEO).  The writer will understand goals and audience needs to produce content tailored for different user journeys/pathways. The writer is able to distill complex topics (such as research, public policy, medical/health) into attention-getting and easy-to-understand information for website visitors. The writer can easily pivot to produce different types of digital content—landing pages, articles, blog posts, policy and educational statements, event and program descriptions, personal stories, forms and surveys, etc.


  • Guidelines and digital content strategy.
  • Ensure web content is optimized for user experience and search engine visibility utilizing current industry trends and best practices. Is a champion of SEO and UX.
  • Provide editorial support to staff subject matter experts to create content for targeted audiences.
  • Execute content in timely manner based on editorial and marketing calendars.
  • Establish and manage web content workflow process.
  • Understand content management systems along with website functionality, content types and page/display templates to inform content strategy.
  • Understand and implement mobile-first content strategies.
  • Use data insights to make content decisions.
  • Assist with copy editing for other digital channels (email, social media, digital advertising).
  • Positive, can-do attitude with a fun and collaborative disposition.


    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
    • Three to five years of related work experience
    • Strong demonstrated comprehension of digital channels including web, email, mobile and social
    • Experience writing for the web with a focus on SEO and UX.
    • Team player with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced working environment
    • Solid understanding and applied experience using a CMS platform
    • Ability to think holistically and across various digital channels
    • Fantastic collaborative communication skills are essential
    • Exceptional organizational skills are required
    • Ability to handle a variety of projects on tight deadlines is a must
    • Experience adhering to style guides; familiarity with AP Style
