The American Lung Association has a great opportunity for a Manager, Health Promotions to join our incredible team in the Northeast Region. Working as a member Health Promotion & Education Team, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education and advocacy.

In this role, you will be responsible to manage, implement and evaluate lung health programs throughout the seven (7) counties of the Hudson Valley Service Region, including; Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Sullivan, Dutchess and Ulster in New York as well as managing the New York State Health Systems for a Tobacco-Free NY grant. This is a grant funded position.


  • Oversee and manage implementation of the New York State Health Systems grant for a Tobacco-Free NY grant:
    • Manage the team to meet or exceed the Work Plan objectives and tasks, with 95% of time spent on deliverables in the 7 County Service Area of the Hudson Valley, NY Monitor and approve expenses.
    • Work with finance to approve monthly invoices.
    • Negotiate annual contract renewal with the New York State Health Department.
    • Assure all deliverables are met.
  • Secure written policies for organization-wide systems change for implementing Tobacco Dependence Treatment (TDT) in the clinical setting including: Systems Strategy 1 - implementation of tobacco user screening systems integrated into electronic medical records; Systems Strategy 2 - system-level provision of training, cessation resources and materials, and feedback to providers that promotes effective intervention; and Systems Strategy 3 - having a dedicated tobacco dependence treatment coordinator with clearly delineated responsibilities ensuring that evidence-based treatment is provided and clear communications with staff are maintained.
  • Coordinate with high level administrators and TDT project coordinators to implement policy systems change.
  • Train clinicians and staff on the TDT policy, and Tobacco Treatment including the 5 A’s – Ask, Assess, Advice, Assist and Arrange for follow-up. Training also to include Nicotine Addiction; Health impacts of smoking including lung diseases, heart diseases, cancers, neurological impairment; Pharmacotherapy, and Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques specific to tobacco dependence.
  • Track progress of implementation of Systems Strategies 1, 2 and 3 as system changes in 2 and 3 that require renewed commitment to higher-level training such as the ALA Freedom from Smoking Facilitator training, Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training, tobacco informational and cessation materials personalized by the health system organization, with built-in sustainable TDT such as written in job descriptions.
  • Customize training for the specific provider partner
  • Community Mobilization and Infrastructure: Explore opportunities to connect and enhance collaborations throughout the seven counties of the Hudson Valley, including: County DOH Community Health Improvement Taskforces (CHIP): Medicaid Redesign Teams (DSRIP Performing Provider Systems ((PPS)); Office of Mental Health and OASAS Regional Teams; Cross County Collaboratives, and Advancing Tobacco-Free Communities (ATFC) grant partners.
  • Educate elected leaders, community members and the media to build support for tobacco control in New York State, and to tailor to the service region.
  • Provide monthly reporting on deliverables.
  • Ensure monthly staff expenses, receipts and invoices are correct. Work with finance to ensure voucher to the NYS Fiscal Department is correct. Manage annual budget to convey and justify budget revisions.
  • Recruit and train individuals to become in Freedom From Smoking facilitators.
  • Participate in and support all area events.
  • Serve on ALA’s regional and national workgroups and committees as requested.
  • Develop and submit timely reports as required by the association and funding sources, including but not limited to weekly updates in the American Lung Association’s (ALA) data base, monthly management reports, grant reports and program metrics reports.
  • Represent the association as a member of community, civic and/or health coalitions and organizations related to the ALA’s mission.
  • Build, maintain and cultivate relationships with funders, facilitators, and community partners to encourage program delivery, sustainability, and growth in service territory, including ALA signature programs where applicable.
  • Select and participate in local, state and national seminars and courses designed to increase skills and knowledge related to job requirements.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in public health, nursing or related medical field.
  • Three years of experience in hospital systems, public health, community relations, public policy, or related field.
  • Knowledge of The Joint Commission, NYSDOH, OMH, OASAS, Public Health Law, institutional and departmental rules and regulations.
  • Experience in coalition building, developing and implementing community awareness, education, and programs specifically related to areas of public health.
  • Experience in the management, implementation and evaluation of programs.
  • Must be a self-starter with excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Ability to multi task in fast paced environment.
  • Positive attitude with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Able to work with minimum direct supervision, make decisions, and take initiative.
  • Proven ability to cultivate and steward relationships across a diverse population.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends with some overnights required.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s license.
  • May be required to travel statewide for providing technical assistance, meetings and conferences as required by assigned grants.
  • Ability to lift approximately 25 lbs.
