The American Lung Association has a great opportunity for a Manager, Health Promotions to join our incredible team in the California Region. Working as a member of the Health Promotion & Education Team, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission:  to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education, and advocacy. 

In this role, you will manage, plan, implement and evaluate lung health programs throughout California markets.  Primary project will focus on reducing tobacco-related health disparities and achieving health equity in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) populations in San Bernardino, Riverside, and Imperial Counties, CA.  Work will focus on building and maintaining partnerships with the LGBTQ community and municipalities to enact and implement smoke free outdoor dining and bar policies, flavor restriction and tobacco retail licensure policies, and smoke free policies for area Pride events to reduce the impact of tobacco use throughout the community and increase the community’s protections from secondhand smoke and the harms of tobacco use.  Position will manage grant deliverables, grant finances, submit timely reports to the funder, and work in collaboration with other grant implementers to ensure maximum results. This position is grant-funded.


  • Lead implementation of tri-county project to reduce tobacco disparities in LGBTQ populations. 
    • Supervise and collaborate with team members in multiple offices.
    • Provide strategic leadership for grassroots mobilization of local LGBTQ communities and local and regional coalitions
    • Facilitate the development of the project strategy and tactical plans while coaching and mentoring partners and volunteer coalition members to develop and maintain their internal capacity to support the campaigns
    • Use principles of intersectional organizing to manage the development and implementation of grassroots mobilization tactics to achieve desired policy outcomes
    • Manage project budget including expense approvals and invoicing
    • Complete required progress and financial reports and manage relationship with funder.
    • Assure all deliverables are met on time and within budget.
  • Implement deliverables for assigned grants.
  • Actively source additional funding opportunities and write grant proposals as necessary.
  • Participate in and support all area events.
  • Serve on ALA’s regional and national workgroups and committees as requested.
  • Develop and submit timely reports as required by the association and funding sources, including but not limited to weekly updates in the American Lung Association’s (ALA) data base, monthly management reports, grant reports and program metric reports.
  • Represent the Association as a member of community, civic and/or health coalitions and organizations related to the ALA’s mission.
  • Build, maintain, and cultivate relationships with funders and community partners to encourage program delivery, sustainability, and growth across California, including ALA signature programs where applicable.
  • Select and participate in local, state, and national seminars and courses designed to increase skills and knowledge related to job requirements.
  • Provide support for required reports and other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and campaign experience required (may include experience such as LGBTQ Back-to-School, Pride, and AIDS/LifeCycle events, Leather title holders, canvassing, and signature collection).
  • 2-3 years of experience in campaign organizing, public health, community relations, public policy research, and implementation or non-partisan issue advocacy strongly preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience working with municipal policymakers preferred.
  • Experience working in partnership with LGBTQ community to advance health equity and policy goals.
  • Experience incorporating principles of intersectional organizing into outreach and campaign work.
  • Experience in coalition building, developing, and implementing community awareness, education, and programs specifically related to areas of public health.
  • Experience in the management, implementation, and evaluation of programs.
  • Must be a self-starter with excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Positive attitude with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Able to work with minimum direct supervision, make decisions, and take initiative.
  • Proven ability to cultivate and steward relationships across a diverse population.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends with some overnights required.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s license.
  • Required to travel statewide for providing technical assistance, meetings and conferences as required by assigned grants.
  • Ability to lift approximately 25 lbs.
