The American Lung Association has a great opportunity for a Intern, Health Promotions to join our incredible team in Redding, CA.  Alongside members of the Health Promotion & Education team, the intern will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education, and advocacy.

The intern will assist the American Lung Association Chico staff to execute health promotion and tobacco control activities to gain experience in the field of outreach, education, evaluation, health policy, and community organizing in the context of tobacco control. The intern’s primary responsibilities will be related to supporting smoke free college campus grant activities at Shasta College’s Redding camp.

TYPE OF INTERNSHIP

This is a paid internship, requiring a time commitment of 10 hours per week or a minimum time commitment of 150 hours (flexible schedule).   This internship is for Spring 2022 and must be completed by August 2022.

Projects:

This is a great opportunity for the intern to enhance their skills in organization, multi-tasking and communications.  The intern can expect to develop confidence and marketable skills by engaging in or assisting with many of the following activities:

  • Gain a basic understanding of the American Lung Association
  • Become knowledgeable of mission, development, and communications efforts.
  • Gain technical training by utilizing Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Microsoft Teams.
  • Participate in staff meetings and learning opportunities.
  • Communications
  • Assist in the development of media materials such as press releases, facts sheets and briefing documents.
  • Assist in compiling media lists, media calendars and communications plans.
  • Assist with brainstorming and providing creative ideas to execute communications efforts for events, programs and advocacy efforts
  • Advocacy & Health Promotion
  • Research and summarize public health facts and figures.
  • Identify, schedule and conduct outreach events and tabling opportunities.
  • Develop and conduct presentations on smoke-free college campuses and other tobacco related topics to various groups.
  • Assemble health education materials for presentations and tabling events.
  • Identify and recruit campus community to participate in project activities.
  • Assist with data collection for program evaluation and for preparation of semi-annual and final grant program reports.
  • Assist with development of smoke-free activities and educational events.
  • Assist in the planning, outreach, coordination, and implementation of a photovoice project with students on campus.

  • Learn more about Non-Profit structure, including mission, development, and communications efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be working towards a degree in Health Sciences, or a related field
  • Must be currently enrolled at Shasta College
  • Qualified candidates must be enthusiastic, reliable, and interested in developing a career in health sciences, advocacy, or non-profit management
  • Qualified candidates should possess strong writing skills, attention to detail, and have a keen interest in the mission of the American Lung Association
  • Ability to multitask, perform in a team environment, and a demonstrated willingness to learn
  • Ability to work independently
  • Reliable transportation
  • Computer Proficiency – Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs. (supplies)
