Albert A. Rizzo, M.D.
National Board Chair
As Chair of the American Lung Association's National Board of Directors, Albert A. Rizzo, M.D., leads the organization's work to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. Dr. Rizzo works closely with the Lung Association's president and CEO to further the mission of the organization by providing governance and oversight of the more than 100-year-old charity.
Dr. Rizzo has been practicing pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine in Wilmington, Delaware since 1983. He currently serves as chief of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine section at Christiana Care Health Systems, as well as managing partner and medical director of the Lung Health and Sleep Enhancement Center at Pulmonary Associates.
Dr. Rizzo has been a volunteer with the American Lung Association since 1987 and has held various leadership roles locally, regionally and nationally. Prior to his election to the American Lung Association national board of directors, he served as the speaker of its nationwide assembly.
He has served as a volunteer for the American Lung Association in Delaware for more than 20 years, including two terms as the state chapter chairman of the board of directors.
Dr. Rizzo’s efforts were integral to establishing the Delaware Asthma Consortium, which now includes more than 60 members from the Delaware community, pharmaceutical companies and businesses to address management and care of individuals with asthma.
After graduating from Johns Hopkins University, where he was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society, Dr. Rizzo then earned his medical degree at Thomas Jefferson University Medical College and was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and fulfilled his specialty training at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.
