What is Fight for Air Walk?
The Fight fir Air Walk is a community event intended to raise funds and awareness for the American Lung Association and its mission of saving lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. The event is 3.1 miles (five kilometers) in length and some people walk the distance while others run. There are usually shorter walk options on event day for those who are unable to complete such a distance. Walks are being held nationwide in an effort to bring attention to this devastating chronic disease, which affects more than 35 million Americans. We know a lot about lung disease, but there is so much we don't know. Your participation will raise the funds necessary to provide life saving education, research and advocacy so we can beat lung disease and soon find a cure.
What time should I be there?
Registration begins at 8 am and the 5K run/walk begins at 9 am.
Where should I park?
There is street parking available, but be careful not to block any driveways, and keep your tires off of the pavement to avoid ticketing. There is also parking available at the Charleston County Parks and Recreation lot for a fee.
Where is the start line?
The 5K run/walk begins at the foot of the Edwin S. Taylor Pier at 101 East Arctic Avenue, Folly Beach.
What is a team captain?
Being a team captain is easy! Captains gather together a few friends or family members and encourage them to participate in the event together. Each team captain helps to coordinate the online registration of these friends as well as setting a goal for the team overall. Team Captains should encourage their participants to personalize their fundraising pages, send e-mails to other friends and family, hit their overall goals, show up to the event and have a great time. Some team captains organize gatherings before or after the walk for their team members, but this is not required. In short, team captains are those who feel capable of rallying and encouraging the troops!
How far is the walk?
The run/walk is a 5K which is equivalent to 3.1 miles. The course is certified.
What do I bring with me on the day of the event?
Please bring any fundraising dollars you have collected and not yet turned in. Please bring a roster of your team members if you are the captain as well as how much each person raised if not already online. You may wish to bring a bottle of water and wear sunscreen depending on the conditions for the day, but most importantly, please bring a positive attitude and lots of energy!
