Fire Department Challenge
Compete in the Firefighter Challenge! Your participation supports research, advocacy and education to study the effects of asthma, lung cancer and other lung diseases that disproportionately affect firefighters.
Teams of five or more firefighters* will compete for the title of the fastest Fire Department. Firefighters climb in full gear (see below) excluding their ax. Firefighters can also climb in the Individual Firefighter Challenge for the title of the fastest firefighter.
REQUIRED GEAR:

All firefighters must climb in their own personal protective equipment (PPE).

Turnout coat (with turnout liners)

Turnout pants (with turnout liners)

Helmet

Gloves

Boots
-
Self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) (not on air and no masks required)
All PPE must be approved for structural fire fighting consistent with NFPA 1971 standards in effect at the time of manufacture.
The SCBA backpack/harness with air bottle must be approved for structural fire fighting consistent with NFPA 1981 standards in effect at the time of manufacture.

Being “on air”
* A firefighter team is: “Active and retired firefighters who are, or were members of an organized first responder (Fire-Rescue or EMS) unit anywhere in the world are eligible to compete. A "Team" may be comprised of individuals from the same entity; i.e., department, borough, fire district, dispatch unit. "All-Star" teams are not permitted.”
