Cincinnati Firefighter Challenge
Compete in the Firefighter Challenge! Your participation supports research, advocacy and education to study the effects of asthma, lung cancer and other lung diseases that disproportionately affect firefighters. Requirements
Team – Teams must be registered for the Firefighter Division to be eligible for the Firefighter Challenge.
Participants - All Firefighter Challenge participants are timed during their vertical climb to reach the top of the 45th floor of the Carew Tower and are to wear full structural firefighting personal protective equipment which meets current NFPA standards. This includes: Boots, turnout coat and pants, helmet, gloves, and SCBA harness with air cylinder. SCBA face pieces and hoods do not need to be worn. Firefighters will not be on air.
All firefighter participants must be current full-time, part-time, or volunteer firefighters.
Firefighter team members not wishing to partake in the Fastest Firefighter Category are not required to wear full structural gear.
Awards
Awards will be given in two categories. Winning teams will receive the traveling trophy for their category. Winners will be announced after official times are reported and after fundraising deadline closes.
Fastest Firefighter Challenge Team - (Note: This is not a relay.) Awarded to the team with the fastest team average time. The fastest Firefighter Team will be determined by taking the top three times of individuals from each team, no matter how large or small the team. Only team members participating in full structural gear will qualify to challenge times.
Top Fundraising Firefighter Team – Awarded to the team with the highest overall fundraising total, no matter how large or small the team.
Challenge FAQ’s
How do I register for the Firefighter Challenge?
Register as you normally would for the Fight For Air Climb. Firefighter Teams must be registered in the Firefighter Team Division in order to join the challenge. Team Captains will choose this division when setting up the team.
How many team members do we need?
Each team must have at least 3 members in order to participate in the challenge.
Am I required to climb in gear?
Only firefighters wishing to partake in the Fastest Firefighter Category must climb in full gear. This will be recorded at the Check-In table on climb day. Those not climbing in full gear will still qualify for the Top Fundraising Firefighter Team Category.
Will the American Lung Association provide gear?
No, the American Lung Association is not able to provide any gear or equipment.
Do I need to have a mask and oxygen tank?
NFPA standards require harness with air cylinder. Face pieces and hoods do not need to be worn. Firefighters do not need to be on air while climbing.
