Event Information

Each year, too many lives are lost to lung disease and this is your chance to climb, raise money and make an impact in their honor. By joining the Fight for Air Climb, you are making the commitment to fight lung disease so everyone can breathe easier- including you!

Event Overview

Fight for Air Climbs are unique fundraising events for the American Lung Association. They usually happen in prominent skyscrapers, stadiums or arenas and involve climbing multiple steps and flights of stairs. Sometimes called a "vertical road race", teams and individual participants can use the event as a fitness target, as a race, with you challenging yourself or you racing against other people, or as a great way to be active and meet new friends.  Stairclimbs are great cross training events for athletes who can not train outdoors in the winter.  Novice and expert athletes of all ages are welcome to climb.  We know a lot about lung disease, but there is so much we don't know. Your participation will raise the funds necessary to provide life saving education, research and advocacy so we can beat lung disease and soon find a cure.

You can get involved by:

  • Registering as a Team Captain
  • Joining an existing Team as a new climber
  • Signing up as an individual climber
  • Sponsoring the event
  • Joining the event planning committee
  • Making a contribution supporting a climber

Climb at Your Own Pace
Register for a personal challenge and see how you do.  No pressure, no stress.  Can you make it to the top?  Attempt to climb up the Carew Tower 45 flights for a total of 804 steps.  We’ll still time you, just for fun.  A typical own pace climber will finish in less than 20 minutes.  Your start time will be approximately 11:30 am – 1:30 pm.  All climbers must raise a minimum of $100 to participate in addition to their registration fee.

Vertical Mile: for those in top physical condition
Register to conquer the Carew with the Vertical Mile option. It's the race of a lifetime, and hard to find. Challenge the clock and other participants as you climb and descend the 45 flights to achieve one full vertical mile up, and one full vertical mile down. You will climb 10 times up, 10 times down, and then another 8 floors and 6 steps! Participants are given 3 hours to complete the challenge. Due to the limited number of spaces available and the intensity of the climb, you must qualify for this category.  Note there is an increased registration fee and $500 fundraising requirement. Serious climbers and fundraisers only. Call 513-985-3990 for details.

Please note:  All Climbers are given flight times, based on their funds raised in 2011 (Super Steppers & Summit Club Teams).  Flight times are used to avoid congestion in the stairs and starting lines.  All participants receive an official Fight For Air Climb medal when they cross the finish line, and an official participant t-shirt (with the minimum $100 fundraising requirement). After the climb, you can take your medal and brag to your friends. You made it!

Fundraising

Each participant’s $100 fundraising minimum must be met by the morning of the climb in order to participate.  All participants who individually raise at least $100 will receive an official event t-shirt and receive their climber medal when they complete their climb.

The average climber raises more than $200 for the cause.  It is easier than you think!  Ask 10 friends for $10.  Additional fundraising ideas area available on the Fundraising Tips page or by calling your local climb manager.

Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by the law. The American Lung Association ® is a registered 501(c)3 organization. Please make checks payable to the American Lung Association.
