CALLING ALL FIREFIGHTERS! GEAR UP. STEP UP. AND BE PART OF THE FIREFIGHTER CHALLENGE!
Top 3 overall male & female firefighter; Fastest fire department team*, Largest fire department team
*Team Requirements: You must have at least 5 members to qualify for the Fastest Fire Department Team award. Members do not have to be from the same department. Example: a team may consist of five members from five different departments.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Each firefighter participant is required to use gear which meets current NFPA structural firefighting standards. Gear that is not issued by your department for structural firefighting must meet NFPA 1971-2007 for structural firefighting: Boots, bunker pants and coat (liners intact), helmet, air tank and mask.
Boots: Must meet NFPA 1971-2007 for structural firefighting standards. It is the responsibility of the participant to verify NFPA standards on their specific brand of boot prior to the competition.
Helmet: Mandatory (Hoods are optional).
SCBA: Must be worn the entire climb in order to qualify for any firefighter-specific award. It is recommended that they be full. Unfortunately due to various sizes, capacities, makes and department standards there will be no official size or weight for the bottle. Therefore the only requirements are that it be worn every step of the course and that participants are “on air”.
Mask: Required. You must be “on air” to qualify for the Firefighter Challenge.
Tools: WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. No tools of any kind, including tool belt, axe, pike pole, etc. will be permitted on the stairs.
*Any equipment that you take into the stairwell must make the trip to the Finish with you. No gear may be discarded in the stairwell.
Start times for teams will be assigned based on the order that the team was created by the team captain. Team members will be given consecutive start times. If a team needs to be divided up and not start all together, please contact the Event Manager at least one week before the climb. Start times for firefighters who are climbing as individuals (not with a team) will be assigned times based on order of registration.
It is the intent of these gear requirements to ensure fairness within the competition. Each participant will be briefly checked prior to entering the stairwell to ensure proper equipment is worn during the course of the event. If a complaint is filed with the Event Manager, it will be investigated. If it is deemed that an infraction has occurred, the participant’s time will not be eligible for any individual or team awards. Please email RochesterClimb@LungNE.org with questions.
