First Responders

Calling all firefighter, police officer, EMS and military personnel! Step up. Gear up. And be part of the First Responders Challenge!

The Climb is not only a great training exercise and personal challenge, but it is also a great way to build team camaraderie and join together in an effort to raise valuable funds and awareness for the American Lung Association. There are two categories in the First Responders Challenge: firefighters and uniformed services. All climbers are timed using an electronic chip, and teams and participants will receive both individual and team times. There will be specific category awards, and all first responders and their supporters are welcome to celebrate their accomplishments at the event’s After Party on 6th St.

In the best interest of competition and to make this challenge as fair as possible, the following guidelines have been established. These guidelines are mandatory requirements to qualify for awards and will be monitored on an honor system. If a complaint is filed with the Fight for Air Climb event manager, it will be investigated. If it is deemed that an infraction has occurred, that competitor's time will be removed from the overall teams qualifying times.

Firefighters

Participants are advised to arrive in clothing that would normally be worn for a cardio workout and to wait to change into gear until shortly before individual start time. Firefighter teams who would like to participate in the Climb wearing clothing that would normally be worn for a cardio workout may do so but will not be scored in the First Responders Challenge. In order to qualify, the following guidelines must be adhered to:

Team – There is no minimum or maximum number of team members required, and team members do not need to be from the same department. However, a team must consist of a minimum of three members to qualify for timing awards as the top three times are used to calculate team totals.

PPE – Must be structural firefighting gear adhering to NFPA 1971. Neither coat nor pants need to have the liner in place. Quarter-length coats are permissible.

Boots – Boots must be structural firefighting boots.

Helmets – Helmets are mandatory.

Hoods – Hood are optional.

Air Tank – Air tanks are optional.

Gloves – Gloves are optional.

Tools – No tools of any kind, including tool belts, axes, etc., are permitted in the stairwell.

Any gear you may bring into the stairwell must make the journey up with you.

Uniformed Services

This category may include but is not limited to police officers, EMS and military (active, veteran, reserve) personnel. Uniformed services teams who would like to participate in the Climb wearing clothing that would normally be worn for a cardio workout may do so but will not be scored in the First Responders Challenge. In order to qualify, the following guidelines must be adhered to:

Team – There is no minimum or maximum number of team members required, and team members do not need to be from the same department. However, a team must consist of a minimum of three members to qualify for timing awards as the top three times are used to calculate team totals.

Uniform – Appropriate personnel uniform is mandatory.

Weapons – No weapons of any kind are permitted in the stairwell.
