Each year, too many lives are lost to lung disease and this is your chance to climb, raise money and make an impact in their honor. By joining the Fight for Air Climb, you are making the commitment to fight lung disease so everyone can breathe easier- including you!
EVENT OVERVIEW
Fight for Air Climbs are unique fundraising events for the American Lung Association. They usually happen in prominent skyscrapers, stadiums or arenas and involve climbing multiple steps and flights of stairs. Sometimes called a "vertical road race", teams and individual participants can use the event as a fitness target, as a race, with you challenging yourself or you racing against other people, or as a great way to be active and meet new friends. Stairclimbs are great cross training events for athletes who can not train outdoors in the winter. Novice and expert athletes of all ages are welcome to climb. We know a lot about lung disease, but there is so much we don't know. Your participation will raise the funds necessary to provide life saving education, research and advocacy so we can beat lung disease and soon find a cure.

CLIMB OPTIONS
TEAM CAPTAINS - When registering please make sure you select your team division type as well as entering your company name during registration.
FULL CLIMB
Take on Michigan's tallest building (the Renaissance Center) all the way to the 70th floor by climbing 1,035 stairs. The most popular option. All climbers must raise a minimum of $100 to participate in addition to their registration fee.
HALF CLIMB
This option is great for first time climbers. Participants will tackle 40 floors of Michigan's tallest building (the Renaissance Center) and climb 585 stairs. Half Climbers are NOT timed. All climbers must raise a minimum of $100 to participate in addition to their registration fee.
FIREFIGHTER FULL GEAR CHALLENGE
All Firefighter Challenge participants are timed during their vertical climb to reach the top of the 70th floor of the Marriott Tower of the Renaissance Center and are to wear full structural firefighting personal protective equipment which meets current NFPA standards. This includes: Boots, turnout coat and pants, helmet, gloves, and SCBA harness with air cylinder. SCBA face pieces and hoods do not need to be worn. Firefighters will not be on air. All climbers must raise a minimum of $100 to participate in addition to their registration fee.
If you are a firefighter wishing to climb without full gear, you can register for the Firefighter Climb as a Firefighter Team or individual and are encouraged to wear your Bunk Shirts.
FIREFIGHTER CLIMB
This is the firefighter option for firefighters who want to climb with their team or as an individual, but not climb in full gear (see Firefighter Full Gear Challenge for what qualifies as full gear). You will still be able to climb with your teammates, but your time will be scored for non full gear awards. All climbers must raise a minimum of $100 to participate in addition to their registration fee.
FIRST RESPONDERS
All Police, EMS, EMT or Armed Forces officers wanting to compete are asked to register for the FULL CLIMB and have your team captain designate your Team Division as First Responder and Company as your Municipality, Company, Branch, etc. All climbers must raise a minimum of $100 to participate in addition to their registration fee.
Please note: All Climbers are given flight times, based on their funds raised in 2010 (Super Steppers & Summit Club Teams). Flight times are used to avoid congestion in the stairs and starting lines. All participants receive an official Fight For Air Climb medal when they return to the GM Wintergarden and an official participant t-shirt (with the minimum $100 fundraising requirement). After the climb, you can take your medal and brag to your friends. You made it!
FUNDRAISING
Each participant’s $100 fundraising minimum must be met by the morning of the climb in order to participate. All participants who individually raise at least $100 will receive an official event t-shirt and receive their climber medal when they complete their climb.
The average climber raises more than $200 for the cause. Participants are required to raise a minimum of $100 in order to participate. It is easier than you think! Ask 10 friends for $10. Additional fundraising ideas are available on the Fundraising Tips page, Team Resources page and the Climber Resources page or by calling your local climb manager.
