Join the hundreds of individuals and teams who will climb their way to the top of EMC Insurance Companies, Hub Tower, and the Des Moines Marriott Downtown for a great cause, lung health. This is a more than your same-old 5K. You could climb a total of 66 floors of Three Downtown Des Moines buildings. Whether a beginner or you've been climbing for many years, this event is a great way to challenge yourself physically while raising money to help people affected by forms of lung disease. We guarantee that all finishers will have a newfound respect for healthy lungs!

  • 3rd to 7th floor one long flight / one flight broken up

Climbs are intended to be consecutive. Elevator time will not be recorded in your time. Your fastest individual climb time will be eligible for awards and recognition.  

 Team Categories
Corporate Team Challenge- Teams of four or more will compete for the title of fastest corporate team. The top three Corporate Teams will be awarded. Fuel the fun and competition in your work place by creating multiple teams! Your team must have at least four people complete all three towers to be considered for an award. 

Fire Department Full Gear Challenge- Relay teams of three more firefighters will compete for the title of fastest Fire Department. Firefighters climb in full gear (mask, boots, tank, etc.) excluding their ax. Two traveling trophies will be awarded one for volunteer and career Click here for guidelines. Take the trophy and bragging rights for a year with you and have your agency’s name engraved (ALA will work out the engraving with you).  Fire Fighters may compete individually and climb all three buildings for the individual accolades. 

Law Enforcement Challenge- Teams of four or more law enforcement agencies will compete for the title of fastest law enforcement team. Climb completed in gym gear. The winning team's time will be compared to that of their peer teams.  Traveling trophy and bragging rights are won for a year.  Take the trophy with you and have your agency’s name engraved (ALA will work out the engraving with you).

Family and Friends- Invite your family and friends to step up to the challenge with you and build a team of four or more people. The more the merrier. Remember we take the fastest four times.

Registration and Fundraising
Climbers
 Registration Fee: $25 Minimum REQUIRED Fundraising/Donation: $100

Teams
Each climber is responsible for his/her individual Registration Fee and Required Fundraising Minimum of $100 in order to climb the day of event.

Fee and Donation Details
The Registration Fee is due at the time of registration and is non-refundable. Climbers have until event day to meet their minimum fundraising requirement of $100 per person ($50 for children).  NO DAY OF EVENT REGISTRATION.  Registration will end at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, 2011.  Climbers who have not met their fundraising requirement on event day (Sunday, March 27, 2011) will need to pay the outstanding amount in order to participate in the climb. Pledges made to the American Lung Association on behalf of climbers who cancel or do not participate in the Climb are non-refundable.

Collecting Pledges and Fundraising
Our online fundraising tools make fundraising quick and simple. You can personalize your webpage with a photo and text about what motivates you to join the Fight For Air Climb. Send emails to friends and family asking for support and to receive online credit card pledges. Any offline donations (cash and checks) that are collected can be mailed to:

Kids CLIMB
Kids CLIMB Categories: 5-8 yrs. and 9-11yrs olds.  Registration is $15 early bird (prior to January 7th) $25 thereafter.
 
The Required Minimum Fundraising of $50 applies to per child and is due by the day of event (Sunday, March 27, 2011).  Awards will be given to male and female in each division.  Ages 12 and up participate in the regular climb and will meet those requirements to climb. 

Every child will receive a trophy at the top.   Please be sure that if your child has any special needs (i.e. medications) that you have them with you.  EMS staff will be on duty to ensure the safety of all competitors.

Your child is asked to check in at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown.  The children will be escorted to EMC Insurance Companies at approximately 10:00 a.m. for the start of their climb (arrive a half hour prior to this).  Each child will need to have their bib number attached to the front of their shirt. The Kids CLIMB will start around 10:30 AM on the 1st floor of EMC Insurance Companies and will end on the 17th.  Water will be available in the stairwell.

A Parent may follow their child in the event that help is needed or you can take an elevator up to the 17th floor to greet your child at the top.  A Parent may not carry their child, unless he/she has refused to continue or a safety issue has been encountered. For the safety and respect of the building and its tenants, if you must exit before you complete the climb, volunteers will be available to assist you.

Climb Boot Camp
We are excited to announce R Studio as the Exclusive Boot camp Sponsor for the 2011 "Fight For Air Climb”! To qualify for Boot camp, you must have $125 raised and commit to raising a $500 fundraising goal by "Fight For Air Climb” Saturday, March 26th. You can join our boot camp at anytime you have $125 raised.
Boot camp will be held each Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. beginning the 5th of February through Saturday, the 26th of March 2011.

Staff will be present at boot camps with extra materials such as posters, brochures, and pledge forms. R Studio gym passes are included for all of their regular weekly class sessions beginning Monday, February 7th. They will also provide a discounted rate to participants who commit to boot camp. Des Moines Marriott Downtown Accommodations

Event Day Information
Start Times: Participants will receive their start times prior to the event via email. Start times will also be posted online 24 hours prior to the event. Start times will begin at 8:00 a.m. and the doors will open at 7:30 a.m. We will begin and end at Des Moines Marriott Downtown. Participants should arrive 45 minutes prior to their start time. Start times will be assigned in waves. Teams will be assigned the same wave, Climbers will climb individually on 10 second intervals in their wave time.

Timing Chips: Timing Chips will be given out day of event (Sunday, March 27th).

 Gear Check: Gear Check will be available to all participants on the day of the event. Please leave any valuable items at home, as we cannot be responsible for lost or stolen items at the event.

Water Stations: Water Stations will be located in the stairwells and also at the top.

Awards
Individual Awards: will be given to both the Male and Female over-all winners. Awards will be given to the top three finishers for men and women in each category. All participants will be divided into the following categories: Click here

Team Awards: Groups of four or more can form a team and compete against other climb teams. Your team may consist of men and/or women in any age category. The four fastest times on your team will be combined to determine the winners. Each team member's individual time will count toward individual age categories. The three fastest teams in each category will be awarded.

Note:  There will not be an Ultimate Climb Challenge this year

 

Safety and Climber Etiquette
To ensure the safety of all climbers and allow for the best experience, please pass slower climber on the wall without the rail, and let them know you are coming from behind to pass. You should always climb on the rail side of the stairwell. Emergency teams will be located at the bottom and top in case you need assistance. Volunteers will be available at the water stations to notify them if you need help.

Each year, too many lives are lost to lung disease and this is your chance to climb, raise money and make an impact in their honor. By joining the Fight for Air Climb, you are making the commitment to fight lung disease so everyone can breathe easier- including you!

Fundraising
Participants are required to fund raise at least $100 toward the cause. This is easier than you think! It is as easy as asking 10 friends for $10. Coaching packets and trainings are available. Please contact our office for more details (800-LUNG-USA or (515) 309-9507 x228).

Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by the law. The American Lung Association ® is a registered 501 (c) 3 organization. Please make checks payable to the American Lung Association in Iowa.

A fundraising packet is available to help you reach your REQUIRED fundraising minimum of $100. Check out the "Fundraising Help" page on the main menu.
