Event Information

Join individuals and teams who will climb their way to the top of three buildings in downtown Des Moines: EMC Insurance Companies, Hub Tower, and the Des Moines Marriott Downtown.

Beginner or seasoned climber, this event is a great way to challenge yourself physically while raising money to help people affected by forms of lung disease. We guarantee that all finishers will have a newfound respect for healthy lungs!

Event Information

Stairclimb Options
Building 1: EMC Insurance Companies - Climb 17 floors totaling 369 steps.

Building 2: Hub Tower - Climb 19 floors totaling 364 steps.

Building 3: Des Moines Marriott Downtown - Climb 32 floors totaling 446 steps.

All participants are required to raise a minimum of $100 on or before event day.

Practicing in the buildings before the event date is not allowed.

Registration and Fundraising
Non-Refundable Registration Fee: $25  ($15 if you register before January 31st!)
Minimum Fundraising Requirement: $100

Climbers have until event day to meet their minimum fundraising requirement of $100 per person ($50 for children).  Climbers who have not met their fundraising requirement on event day will need to pay the outstanding amount in order to participate in the climb. Pledges made to the American Lung Association on behalf of climbers who cancel or do not participate in the Climb are non-refundable.

Online registration will end at midnight on March 31, 2013. NO DAY OF EVENT REGISTRATION. To register after the close of online registration, please contact the office at events@lungia.org or 515-309-9507.

Collecting Pledges and Fundraising
Our online fundraising tools make fundraising quick and simple. For fundraising assistance, please contact the office at events@lungia.org or 515-309-9507. We can help you personalize your webpage, draft fundraising letter and create afundraising plan designed for you!

Credit card donations can be made directly to your fundraising website. Any offline donations (cash and checks) that are collected can be mailed to:

Ticket to Climb
Raise more than $1,000 and be eligible to climb for FREE at any of the other Upper Midwest Region stairclimb events in 2013. No registration fee or additional fundraising required.

Team Categories
Corporate Team Challenge - Teams of four or more will compete for the title of fastest corporate team. The top three Corporate Teams will be recognized. Fuel the fun and competition in your work place by creating multiple teams! Your team must have at least four people complete all three buildings in order to be eligible for an award.

Fire Department Relay Challenge - Does your department have what it takes?? Relay teams of three firefighters will compete for the title of fastest fire department. Firefighters climb in full gear (PPE, boots, tank, helmet, hood, etc.) excluding their ax. Two traveling trophies will be awarded to the fastest volunteer and career firefighter teams. Click here for guidelines. Take home the trophy and bragging rights for a year with you. Your name will be engraged on the coveted traveling trophy!  Fire Fighters may also compete individually and climb all three buildings for the individual accolades.

Law Enforcement Challenge - Does your department have what it takes?? Teams of three will compete for the title of fastest law enforcement team. The climb will be completed in gym gear. Compete for the opportunity to win the coveted travelling trophy and bragging rights! Your name will be engraved on the traveling trophy. Law enforcement may also compete individually and climb all three buildings for the individual accolades.

Family and Friends - Invite your family and friends to step up to the challenge with you and build a team of four or more people. The fastest four teams will be awarded.

Kids Climb
Categories: 5-8 years, 9-11 years
Registration: $25 ($15 for Early Bird Registration)
Fundraising/Donation: $50 required minimum per child

Every child will receive a trophy at the top. Please be sure that if your child has any special needs (i.e. medications) that you have them with you.  EMS staff will be on site to ensure the safety of all competitors. Please check in your child at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown and apply their bib number to the front of their shirt.

Kids Climb Tentative Schedule of Events

9:30 AM: Arrive at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown

10:00 AM: Kids are escorted to the EMC Insurance Companies

10:30 AM: The Kids Climb will start on the 2nd floor of EMC Insurance Companies and will end on the 17th.  Water will be available in the stairwell.

A parent may follow their child in the event that help is needed or parents will be escorted to the 17th floor to greet their child at the top.  A parent may not carry their child, unless he/she has refused to continue or a safety issue has been encountered. For the safety and respect of the building and its tenants, if your child must exit before you complete the climb, volunteers will be available to assist you.

Awards
Individual Awards: These will be given to both the Male and Female overall winners. Awards will be given to the top three finishers for men and women in each category.

Team Awards: Teams will consist of four climbers. Teams may be comprised of 4 men, 4 women or a combination of men and women. The three fastest times on your team will be combined to determine the winners. Each team member's individual time will count toward individual age categories. The three fastest teams in each category will be awarded.

Safety Procedures
Safety: Trained medical personnel will be located in the stairwell, at the top of each building and on the third floor of the Des Moines Marriott Downtown.

Emergency Procedures: In the event that an emergency is reported in the building, you will be instructed what to do over the P.A. sound system. Please wait for instructions, do not panic.

Climber Etiquette
Water Stations: Water stations are located throughout the stairwells of all three buildings.

Passing: Always announce your presence and your intent to pass the slower climber. Climb on the rail side of the stairwell. Pass on the wall without the rail.
