FAQ

What is the Fight for Air Climb?

Fight for Air Climbs are unique fundraising events for the American Lung Association. They usually happen in prominent skyscrapers, stadiums or arenas and involve climbing multiple steps. Sometimes called a "vertical road race", teams and individual participants can use the event as a fitness target, as a race, with you challenging yourself or you racing against other people, or as a great way to be active and meet new friends.  We know a lot about lung disease, but there is so much we don't know. Your participation will raise the funds necessary to provide life saving education, research and advocacy so we can beat lung disease and soon find a cure.

What is a team captain?

Being a team captain is easy.  Captains gather together a few friends or family members and encourage them to participate in the event together.  Each team captain helps to coordinate the online registration of these friends as well as setting a goal for the team overall.  Team Captains should encourage their participants to personalize their fundraising pages, send e-mails to other friends and family, hit their overall goals, show up to the event and have a great time.  Some team captains organize gatherings before or after the climb for their team members, but this is not required.  Sometimes the team captain serves as a representative at the annual event kickoff luncheon.  In short, we need help to rally the troops and the best people for the job are always our team captains.

What do I need to know about Packet Pick Up?

Packets include each registrants official timing device, event day t-shirt, and goodie bag. Packet pick up will be Wednesday November 9th-Friday November 11th at the American Lung Association office located at 851 Outer Road Orlando, FL 32814 from 8 AM to 6 PM daily.  Participants can also pick up packets the morning of the event beginning at 7 AM.**In order for participants to be able to pick up their packets, the $100 fundraising goal must be met. Packets will not be issued to individuals who have not met their fundraising goal.** Fundraising dollars will also be collected at packet pick up and participants will be asked to sign a paper waiver form at packet pick up.

Can I pick up the packets for other people on my team?

Yes, as long as those team members have raised the fundraising minimum and you have a signed, paper waiver form. They can be printed, signed and brought to packet pick up by clicking here.

Can I trade by bib/timing device number for another one?

NO, it is crucial that timing devices used during the climb correspond to those that were distributed to each participant at packet pick up. This will ensure that times and ranking are accurate for our awards ceremony. **Also do not bend your timing device as it will destroy the chip and we may not be able to gather a climb time. Timing chips must be returned after the climb.

What time should I arrive to the event itself?

The registration/check-in will open at 7 AM with opening ceremonies beginning at 7:40 AM. The climb officially begins at 8 AM. Climb times are done in waives. Team and individual climb times are available under "Schedule of Events". We ask that you arrive at least one hour before your climb time.

Where should I park?

Parking will be available for $5 cash only in the Bank of American Center garage. Directions to the garage (including street closures) are under the "Directions" link on the left column of the HOME screen or click here. Keep in mind that streets will be closing in downtown Orlando the morning of the event due to the Veteran's Day parade. Make sure to check the street closures map to make your route on event day and leave early if you are unfamiliar with downtown Orlando.

What should I bring with me on the day of the event?

Please bring any fundraising dollars you have collected and not yet turned in.  Please bring a roster of your team members if you are the captain as well as how much each person raised if not already online.  You may wish to bring a bottle of water and wear sunscreen depending on the conditions for the day. Don't forget $5 cash for parking. You may also want to bring your wallet if you plan on dining at Terrace 390 after you climb but most importantly, bring a positive attitude and LOTS of ENERGY!

What if I don’t meet my fundraising goal by the morning of the event?

Participants having trouble fundraising should get in touch with their team captain, read over our e-newsletters, check the fundraising tab on our website AND contact our development staff at the ALA! We are here to help you reach your goals!!!

What if I don't think I can make it to the 25th floor?

An emergency medical personnel will be roaming the stairwell to check on the safety of our participants. Water is also available on different levels of the stairwell and we have an emergency exit on the 12th floor. Keep in mind, it is perfectly acceptable to take breaks, just make sure to step off to the side to allow other climbers to pass.

When will I know my official climb results time?

Climb results and rankings will be posted by the end of the day Saturday pending no major technical problems.

When will awards be distributed?

Join us Wednesday, November 16th at 6 PM for the awards ceremony hosted by Terrace 390 (390 N. Orlando Avenue #110 Orlando, FL 32801 *located on the first floor of the Bank of America Center). Complimentary soft drinks and flat bread will be served. Cash bar and full dinner menu will also be available.

Are pets allowed?

No, pets are not allowed.
