What is the Fight for Air Run/Walk?
The Fight for Air Run/Walk is a community event intended to raise funds and awareness for the American Lung Association. Generally, our events are 3.1 miles (five kilometers) in length. Some people walk the distance and others run. There are usually shorter walk options on event day for those who are unable to complete such a distance. Run/Walks are being held nationwide in an effort to bring attention to this devastating chronic disease. We know a lot about lung disease, but there is so much we still have to learn. Your participation will raise the funds necessary to provide life-saving education, research and advocacy so we can beat lung disease and soon find a cure. The race will be professionally timed and ranked and the course is ceritifed. All runners will receive their bibs and timing chips at registration/check-in. All registered participants will receive a free Run/Walk T-shirt. Awards will be given to the fastest individual runners in numerous age and gender groups, top individual fundraisers, and top fundraising teams.
What time should I be there?
Registration will open at 6:15 AM and remain open until 7:05 AM. Runners and walkers will all start the certified 5k at 7:30 AM, however runners will be called to line-up at the start line in advance. All walkers should respectfully allow runners to move to the front of the pack.
Where should I park?
Parking is available at parking meters within the vicinity of the park. You may also choose to park and pay at the Las Olas Park Place Riverfront Parking Garage. Please note that you will be responsible for parking fees. The American Lung Association will not be responsible for any participant or volunteer parking tickets.
Directions to the Garage:
From I-95, take the Broward Boulevard exit, head east and turn right onto Brickell Avenue. Go through the traffic light and follow the road beyond the valet parking area into the self-parking driveway on your right.
Where are the start line & finish lines?
The start line is in Huizenga Plaza by the riverfront and near the stage Once you're in the plaza you'll see a balloon arch marking both the start & finish lines.
What is a team captain?
Being a team captain is easy, but it also requires leadership and organization. Captains gather together a few friends or family members and encourage them to participate in the event together. Each team captain helps to coordinate the online registration of these friends as well as setting a goal for the team overall. Team Captains should encourage their participants to personalize their fundraising pages, send e-mails to other friends and family, hit their overall goals, show up to the event and have a great time. Some team captains organize gatherings before or after the walk for their team members, but this is not required. In short, we need help to rally the troops and the best people for the job are always our team captains.
How far is the Run/Walk?
The course is a certified 5K (3.1 miles).
What do I bring with me on the day of the event?
Please bring any fundraising dollars you have collected and not yet turned in. Please bring a roster of your team members if you are the captain as well as how much each person raised if not already online. You may wish to bring a bottle of water and wear sunscreen depending on the conditions for the day, but most importantly, please bring a positive attitude and lots of energy! We will not have a designated area for your personal items to be stored while you run or walk. If you don't have anyone that will hold your belongings while you're on the route, please leave your items in your car, or carry them in a satchel that won't inhibit you during the race.
Are pets allowed?
Unless otherwise specified because of unique restrictions at our location, pets are encouraged if on a leash. Obviously, the American Lung Association is responsible for the cleanliness of Huizenga Plaza after the event is over. Please respect our organization and the plaza by cleaning up any mess your pet makes throughout the morning.
