How do my donations help?
With the generous support of people like you, the American Lung Association in California saves lives by fighting for healthy lungs and healthy air. Today, our fight is more important than ever. Eighty-one cents of every dollar raised by our organization goes directly to education, research and advocacy.
Is there a fee to register, or a fundraising requirement?
No, its free to sign up and we have no fundraising requirements. However, this is a fundraiser, and your donations greatly support our mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. So to thank you for your hard work, every walker who raises a minimum of $100 receives a FREE event t-shirt! And for those who go above and beyond $250 have their choice of other incentive prizes. Visit the Incentive Prizes page for more details.
Need help keeping track of your donations? Download a Donation Tracking Sheet. You can mail it into your local office, or bring with you on the day of the walk.
What is Fight for Air Walk?
The Fight For Air Walk is a community event intended to raise funds and awareness for the American Lung Association. Generally, our events are 3.1 miles (five kilometers) in length and some people walk the distance and others run. There are usually shorter walk options on event day for those who are unable to complete such a distance. Walks are being held nationwide in an effort to bring attention to this devastating chronic disease. We know a lot about lung disease, but there is so much we don't know. Your participation will raise the funds necessary to provide life saving education, research and advocacy so we can beat lung disease and soon find a cure.
What time should I be there?
On the morning of the event, registration and our Festival Area will open at 8:00 am. We'll start warming up at 8:45 and begin our opening ceremony at 9:00. Walking begins at 9:30 am.
Where should I park?
There are several lots surrounding the 3rd Street Promenade that offer the first 2 hours free. Rates vary after the 2 hour window. We suggest the following lots: S2, S3, S4, S5, and S6. Please note that there are restrooms in each parking structure and in Palisade Park. There will not be any onsite at walk start/finish line on the Promenade.
Please also view this Parking Map for further information.
New Bike Valet, provided by Central Parking
Be green and ride your bike to the walk! Central parking will be providing bike valet FREE of charge to any participant of the Fight For Air Walk. Simply ride up, check your bike and they will park it safely fo ryou right on the Promenade. Hours of operation are from 8am-12pm.
Where is the start line?
The start/finish line and Festival Area will be held on Third Street between Santa Monica and Arizona.
What is a team captain?
Being a team captain is easy. Captains gather together a few friends or family members and encourage them to participate in the event together. Each team captain helps to coordinate the online registration of these friends as well as setting a goal for the team overall. Team Captains should encourage their participants to personalize their fundraising pages, send e-mails to other friends and family, hit their overall goals, show up to the event and have a great time. Some team captains organize gatherings before or after the walk for their team members, but this is not required. Sometimes the team captain serves as a representative at the annual event kickoff luncheon. In short, we need help to rally the troops and the best people for the job are always our team captains.
How far is the walk?
The Santa Monica walk is about 2.55 miles. It is a scenic and flat route that shows off the best of Downtown Santa Monica.
What do I bring with me on the day of the event?
Please bring any fundraising dollars you have collected and not yet turned in. Please bring a roster of your team members if you are the captain as well as how much each person raised if not already online. You may wish to bring a bottle of water and wear sunscreen depending on the conditions for the day, but most importantly, please bring a positive attitude and lots of energy!
Are pets allowed?
Dogs on leashes are welcome on the promenade, but please review local city regulations and plan to clean up after your pet. Please also keep in mind that there will be a large number of people and that your dog should be comfortable in that kind of situation.
