HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (ANY FIRST RESPONDER TEAM):
- You must have a minimum of 4 members to qualify for the Fastest Department Team award.
- The top 4 times will be averaged to determine the time, an ultimately, the winner of the Fastest Department Team award.
IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS
- Use the discount code: hero2013 (lower case, one word) in order to waive the $25 registration fee.
- Put the name of your department (or the Team Captain's department, if team members are from multiple departments) in the "Team Company" field
- Each member must choose “First Responder Climb” when asked in question #2 during registration.
FIRE DEPARTMENT CHALLENGE
Compete in the Firefighter Challenge! Your participation supports research, advocacy and education to study the effects of asthma, lung cancer and other lung diseases that disproportionately affect firefighters.
Teams of four or more firefighters will compete for the title of the fastest Fire Department. Firefighters participating in the Challenge will be required to adhere to the gear requirements as listed below. Any registered Firefighter, whether on a team or not, will automatically be eligible for the Individual Firefighter Challenge and the title of the fastest firefighter.

Los Angeles Firefighter Challenge Gear Requirements
In order to participate in the Firefighter Challenge, you must adhere to the following gear requirements.
PPE - Must be structural firefighting gear adhering to NFPA 1971. Both coat and bunker pants MUST have the liner in place. Failure to have a liner will result in your time not being counted toward the Firefighter Division awards. Bunker pants must be worn. 3/4 coats are permissible.
BOOTS - All boots must be structural firefighting boots. Rubber, leather & lace up boots will be permitted, provided they are fire rated. No station boots will be permitted when qualifying for the trophy. Again, boots must be structural firefighting boots.
GLOVES - Gloves are optional.
HELMET & HOOD – Firefighter helmets are mandatory, hoods are optional.
UNDERLAYERS – Optional, but it is recommended that some sort of clothing be worn.
HOSE – Optional.
TOOLS - WILL NOT BE ALLOWED (i.e., axe, halligan, pike pole, etc.)
Any EMS team is more than welcome in the Firefighter competition provided they meet the above requirements.
Fire Fighter Awards (in addition to standard event awards – firefighters can qualify for two awards)
- Fastest Team – traveling trophy
- Top 4 times from each team are averaged to determine winning team
- Fastest Male & Female Firefighter
- Top Fundraising Team
- Top Fundraising Individual
POLICE DEPARTMENT CHALLENGE
Teams of at least 4 members compete to see who will be the fastest squad up the stairs.
Compete to win one, or all of the following:
