Event Overview
“What is the Fight For Air Climb?”
The Fight For Air Climb is a stair climb event. Or as some like to call it a “vertical foot race”. This is a timed event that can be done by the serious or “elite” athlete as well as friends, family and coworkers.
The Anchorage Fight For Air Climb will be held at the Anchorage Downtown Hilton. Participants will climb the 35 flights (556 steps) in the two towers of the Hilton. You will run up the two sets of stairs, taking the elevator down in between. The race ends in the Chart Room at the top of the Hilton. Here friends and family will be invited to join you as you cross “the finish line”.
There are three categories to choose from.
Elite: if you feel you would like to participate competitively this is the category to choose. Every participant will be given a timing chip to attach to their shoe. Elite athletes will be going in the first wave of the event. With start times beginning at 8:00am.
First Responder: if you are firefighter you could select this category. This is for Firefighters that will participate in full gear. If you enter as a first responder you will be given specific start time toward the end of the day. If you are a firefighter team that would like to go without gear you would create a team or sign up individually as a “friends and family” or “elite” participant.
Friends and Family: this group will make up the majority of our participants. This is for those who want to have fun and enjoy their climb for a good cause.
How the start works: All team members will be grouped together with a similar start time (to be given the week of the race). We will stager individual starts in 12 second increments. Elite Athletes are scheduled to start the event prior to friends and family as they will be more likely to pass fellow participants. Also, First Responders will go last to avoid passing in full gear.
This is a FUNdraiser with a registration fee (see below for more details). The fundraising amount and registration fee are for individuals not teams. So, each person on your team would be responsible for reaching their own fundraising goal. Our goal is minimal but you can set your personal goal at any dollar amount you would like. The sky is the limit!
You can get involved by:
- Registering as a Team Captain
- Joining an existing Team as a new registrant
- Signing up as an individual registrant
- Making a contribution supporting a climber
- Sponsoring the event
- Joining the event planning committee
