Event Information
Each year, too many lives are lost to lung disease and this is your chance to climb, raise money and make an impact in their honor. By joining the Fight for Air Climb, you are making the commitment to fight lung disease so everyone can breathe easier- including you!
Event Overview
“What is the Fight For Air Climb?”
The Fight For Air Climb is a stair climb event. Or as some like to call it a “vertical foot race”. This is a timed event that can be done by the serious or “elite” athlete as well as friends, family and coworkers.
The Anchorage Fight For Air Climb will be held at the Anchorage Marriott Downtown (more information below under location).
Stairclimb + Scare Climb
This year, in honor of Halloween, we have added a scary new element – a “Scare” Climb! If you want to bring the kids for some Scary Fun and Fitness, join us for the Scare Climb as well! Kids will have a blast while learning how to have healthy lungs while climbing flights of stairs at the Anchorage Marriott Downtown. There will be Halloween-themed treats, goodie bags, costume contests, and scary facts about tobacco! (Children must be accompanied by an adult – maximum 2 children per adult.)
If you want to bring the kids for the Scare Climb only, it is $10 for a parent and up to two children. (Children must be accompanied by an adult – maximum 2 children per adult.) Kids are encouraged to wear costumes, but in the interest of safety, they must meet the following guidelines:
- No masks
- Both hands must be free (no hand props)
- Costumes must not impede safe stair climbing, i.e. tails or clothing that drags behind, or floor length dresses/capes, etc.
- No revealing, offensive or graphic costumes
- Apropriate athletic shoes must be worn
Stairclimb Only
We look forward to having you join us for the 2012 Stair Climb! In honor of Halloween, participants in the regular Stairclimb are welcome to dress in costume, with the following restrictions:
- No masks
- Both hands must be free (no hand props)
- Costumes must not impede safe stair climbing, i.e. tails or clothing that drags behind, or floor length dresses/capes, etc.
- Appropriate athletic shoes must be worn
- No revealing, offensive or graphic costumes
There are three categories to choose from (even if you are doing the Scare Climb).
Elite: If you feel you would like to participate competitively this is the category to choose. Every participant will be given a timing chip to attach to their shoe. Elite athletes will be going in the first wave of the event. With start times beginning at 8:00am. Age is 16 and over and all 76 floors are required.
First Responder: if you are firefighter you could select this category. This is for Firefighters that will participate in full gear. If you enter as a first responder you will be given specific start time toward the end of the day. If you are a firefighter team that would like to go without gear you should create a team or sign up individually as a “friends and family” or “elite” participant.
Friends and Family: this group will make up the majority of our participants. This is for those who want to have fun and enjoy their climb for a good cause.
How the start works:
All team members will be grouped together with a similar start time (to be given the week of the race). We will stager individual starts in 12 second increments. Elite Athletes are scheduled to start the event prior to friends and family as they will be more likely to pass fellow participants. Also, First Responders will go last to avoid passing in full gear.
This is a FUNdraiser with a registration fee (see below for more details). The fundraising amount and registration fee are for individuals not teams. So, each person on your team would be responsible for reaching their own fundraising goal. Our goal is minimal but you can set your personal goal at any dollar amount you would like. The sky is the limit!
You can get involved by:
- Registering as a Team Captain
- Joining an existing Team as a new registrant
- Signing up as an individual registrant
- Making a contribution supporting a climber
- Sponsoring the event
- Joining the event planning committee
