Dr. Martinez is a physician-scientist in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. In March 2014, he assumed the position of Executive Vice Chairman in the Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. He has a long standing interest in the investigation of the biological underpinnings and therapeutic implications of asthma and COPD including: the Principal Investigator of numerous NHLBI sponsored clinical trials and contracts (National Emphysema Treatment Trial, the COPD Clinical Research Network, the Long Term Oxygen Treatment Trial, COPDGene, the Lung Tissue Research Consortium and the SPIROMICS study); co-PI of an active study examining the microbiota in chronic bronchitics treated with roflumilast or matched placebo longitudinally over a 16 week period; co-PI of an active study which is designing a COPD Case Finding methodololgy for the primary care setting; co-PI of an active study defining the optimal imaging metrics to define disease phenotypes in COPD; member of the Steering Committee of numerous sentinel industry therapeutic trials (SUMMIT, REACT, and RESPOND); and a master's degree in biostatistics and clinical study design from the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
