What are the Symptoms of Human Metapneumovirus?

Most people have mild symptoms including:

  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Fever

Symptoms of more severe disease include:

  • High fever
  • Severe cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Abnormally rapid breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea 

How is Human Metapneumovirus Detected?

Human metapneumovirus testing is not widely available. Currently only research laboratories and a limited number of commercial laboratories perform testing for the virus. The most common method of testing is a test of respiratory secretions (from the nose or throat).

 How is Human Metapneumovirus Treated?

There is no specific antiviral treatment for hMPV infection. Treatment depends on how severe the illness is. It is aimed at relieving symptoms and may include:

  • Fever reducers
  • Antihistamines
  • Breathing treatments (for severe cases)
