Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative Champion Awards Guidelines & Criteria

Target: K-12 Schools (Public, Private, or Chartered)

The American Lung Association's Asthma-Friendly School Initiative includes four overarching strategies and twenty (20) recommended components. You may be eligible for a Gold AFSI Champion Award or a Silver AFSI Champion Award depending on how many of the recommended components that you meet satisfactorily.

  • All recommended components listed in each of the four sections that include an asterisk (*) are required of all AFSI Champion Award nominees to answer. There are a total of seven (7) components marked with an asterisk (*).
  • Award nominees must provide sufficient evidence that each recommended component included in the application is established within the school or school district and exhibits the potential for long-term sustainability.
  • Silver AFSI Champion Award: In addition to meeting the minimum requirements marked with an asterisk, a silver-level nominee must include an additional two (2) recommended components set forth by the Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative Toolkit.
  • Gold AFSI Champion Award: A gold-level nominee will have met all twenty (20) recommended components set forth by the by the Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative Toolkit.
