American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic Legislative Successes
On March 16, 2016 members of the American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic joined LUNG FORCE Heroes from across the country on Capitol Hill to advocate for robust and sustainable federal funding increases for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), so there can be better treatments and cures for people with lung cancer.
At the state level, the American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic worked to ensure that prevention and cessation program funding was provided.
Other successes included:
- Pennsylvania passed a $1-per-pack cigarette tax increase, added on to the previous tax of $1.60 for a total of $2.60 per pack tax.
- The Keystone state also passed the first ever tax on other tobacco products such as; electronic cigarettes and any loose and smokeless tobacco.
Turning now to West Virginia, where after a delayed budget and long battle, the Legislature approved a 65-cent tobacco tax increase on cigarettes. In addition, e-cigarette and other tobacco product taxes will also be on the rise. This increase was a step forward towards reducing tobacco use in West Virginia.
Tobacco tax increases are one of the most effective ways to reduce smoking and other tobacco use, especially among youth. Every 10 percent increase in cigarette prices reduces youth smoking by about seven percent and total cigarette consumption by about four percent.
