The American Lung Association in Iowa tobacco control team works to prevent youth and young adults from starting to smoke, promotes quitting in youth and adults, eliminates exposure secondhand smoke, and identifies and eliminates tobacco-related disparities. The Lung Association uses the Centers for Disease Control’s best practices for comprehensive tobacco control programs.

As a result of this work on an 8-county service area in Iowa, the program has seen the following results:

  • 5 schools implemented comprehensive nicotine-free policies.
  • 5 child care centers implemented comprehensive nicotine-free policies.
  • 32 parks and trails implemented comprehensive nicotine-free policies.
  • 19 businesses implemented comprehensive nicotine-free policies.
  • 38 clinics and community health partners were trained in Ask, Advise and Refer to connect individuals to tobacco cessation program and services available to them through Quitline Iowa.
  • 5 behavioral and mental health organizations were trained in Ask, Advise and Refer to connect individuals to tobacco cessation program and services available to them through Quitline Iowa.
  • 17 properties implemented a smoke-free housing policy with at least one building being 100% smoke-free.

The program is funded by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Division of Tobacco Use Prevention and Control.
