Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey doctor wins prestigious award to research lung cancer in women

For the first time ever, the American Lung Association has awarded Sharad Goyal, MD the LUNG FORCE Research Innovation Project: Lung Cancer in Women Award, funded by the Lung Association's LUNG FORCE initiative, which raises awareness of the impact of lung cancer in women and critical funds for lung cancer research. Dr. Goyal is a radiation oncologist and Associate Professor at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. His primary research focuses on the integration of data from epidemiological settings in cardiology and oncology to better inform treatment and survivorship issues among cancer patients.

Through this new award—funding $400,000 over three years—Dr. Goyal and his team will seek to determine if radiation exposure from interventional cardiovascular procedures leads to increased risk of lung cancer in women as compared to men.

"Funding from the American Lung Association will allow me to research questions that are important to both lung cancer patients and the medical community, as our findings may reduce the incidence and mortality of lung cancer patients," Dr. Goyal said. "By being able to discuss the risks, benefits and alternatives to medical imaging of the heart, patients will be better informed of their risk of developing cancer."

Lung cancer in women indicates that there are potential differences in risk factors as compared to men, and through this LUNG FORCE research award we will be better able to identify one of those potential risk factors.
