From Your Local Lung Association
Message from the American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic President and CEO, Deborah P. Brown
Through your generous support the American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic has made tremendous progress over the past year in the fight against lung disease and for lung health. We take our mission to save lives very seriously.
To highlight a few of our efforts this year we have:
- involved more than 25,000 young people in our youth tobacco control movement;
- helped 1,000 people quit using tobacco or attempt to quit;
- worked with 50 Better Breathers Clubs in six states and;
- supported nine researchers in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Second, we are working tirelessly in our efforts to educate policymakers about lung disease and lung health. This past year members of the American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic joined LUNG FORCE Heroes from across the country in Washington, D.C. to advocate for sustainable federal funding increases for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), so there can be better treatments and cures for people with lung cancer. On a state level we have worked to ensure funding is available for our prevention and cessation programs, and were pleased to see two states –Pennsylvania and West Virginia- increase the tobacco tax.
One of our goals in the coming year will be to continue building on community partnerships that we have forged over the past several years. Among these partnerships are our ongoing relations with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Penn Medicine and Ames Charitable Foundation.
Finally, without research there would be little hope for the more than 31 million Americans living with chronic lung disease. We are excited to announce that the first ever LUNG FORCE Research Innovation Project: Lung Cancer in Women Award went to Dr. Sharad Goyal of Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
It is together—through education, advocacy and research—we can save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. We could not do this without your help and support.
