What is Hanulike?

Hanulike: Hawaiʻi’s Healthy Air Initiative is bringing together the best of clean, healthy air programs from the American Lung Association in Hawaii and partners. Celebrating this NEW campaign, we need YOUR help! For a limited time only, help us picture a future with ‘Healthy Air’… what does it look like? Show us by sending your original photos for a chance to win!

Hanulike means “we breathe together”. The Ha, or Breath of Life, reminds us that whatever we do to the air affects our family, friends, classmates, neighbors and ourselves. This spirit of interconnectedness brings us together to protect the air in our homes, schools, vehicles and shared spaces.

In addition to promoting healthy air, the American Lung Association in Hawaii partners with organizations and schools to provide these lifesaving programs:

  • Asthma Management:   Open Airways for Schools and Kickin’ Asthma gives students in elementary and middle school the tools they need to keep their asthma well controlled.   Asthma 101 helps adult caretakers understand what asthma is and how to prevent and manage asthma symptoms.
  • Tobacco Cessation: All of Hawai'i’s counties have passed laws to make sure all cars, trucks, and busses are SmokeFree Vehicles whenever keiki are inside. In the last two years alone, the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking clinics have empowered nearly 1,000 Hawaii residents with the tools and resources to quit smoking.
  • Indoor Air Quality:   The air indoors can be up to 5x more polluted than the air Outdoors! ¹   The Healthy Homes program sends trained facilitators into the homes of families living with asthma to provide practical, affordable solutions to make homes safe from common asthma triggers.
