Wyndham Vacation Ownership Team Reunites to Support the American Lung Association

(March 23, 2015)

Since 2011, Kat Young has participated in the American Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climb: Providence. Over the past four years, Young and her teammates have raised over $10,000 to donate to the Lung Association to support lung disease research. This year the Wyndham Vacation Ownership team has set a goal of $7,000; and Young is the climb’s fourth highest fundraiser raising nearly $1,200. “We love competing with each other to see who is able to fundraise the most,” Young said.

Fight for Air Climbs are the American Lung Association’s most unique fundraisers. Climbs take place in prominent skyscrapers, stadiums or arenas and involve walking, running or racing up hundreds of steps. Sometimes called a "vertical road race,” teams and individual participants can use the event as a fitness target, as a race, or as a great way to be active and meet new friends.  Many participants use it as a way to honor a family member that has been affected by lung disease.

This year, the 13-person team has two members, Desiree Trull and Kalina Kennedy, returning who have been relocated to the Poconos for their job, but still remain dedicated to helping the American Lung Association spread its mission of improving lung health and preventing lung disease by traveling over 300 miles. With over a dozen team members, Wyndham Vacation Ownership is one of the largest teams participating in the climb.  “The Fight for Air Climb is a great cause and we have many members of our team who have personal connections to the Lung Association’s mission. The most important part about our participation is raising awareness about why we’re climbing,” Young said. Young further dedicates her time to the Lung Association by participating as a member of the Providence Stair Climb committee and volunteering her time throughout the year.

“We’re pleased to have the Wyndham Vacation Ownership team returning to our Fight for Air Climb in Providence,” said Jeff Seyler, President & CEO of the American Lung Association of the Northeast. “It’s important to have dedicated participants for each and every one of our climbs, these are the people who help our organization spread our mission and create awareness about the importance of young health.

To help fundraise, members of the Wyndham Vacation Ownership team have hosted a bake sale and a Dress Down day at work, where participants are asked to donate five dollars in order to wear jeans to work; Young said the fundraiser was their biggest one yet. “This encourages everyone to really get involved. You would be surprised how many people want to wear jeans to work.”

All proceeds from the Fight for Air Climb: Providence will directly fund lung disease research, advocacy and education; including smoking cessation programs, COPD/asthma management, and fighting for stronger clean air standards.
