Phoenix Residents Join LUNG FORCE Walk to End Lung Cancer
(November 10, 2015) - PHOENIX, AZ
American Lung Association Event at Riverview Park Supports LUNG FORCE, a Nationwide Initiative Fighting Lung Cancer in Women
On Saturday, November 14, the American Lung Association in Arizona will host its annual LUNG FORCE Walk to support the nationwide initiative LUNG FORCE. Now in its second year, this initiative seeks to make lung cancer in women a public health priority, drive policy change and increase research funding. Lung cancer is the top cancer killer of both women and men in America.
The LUNG FORCE Walk-Phoenix, locally sponsored by Scottsdale Bullion and Coin, is a unique, festive event that will make a difference for lung cancer detection, research and cures. Registration and festivities, including Team photos, kid zone with inflatables, lung heroes tent with chair massages, Zumba before the walk starts, fun with local sports team’s mascots, lung health information, clean air advocacy, prize drawings, awards, sponsor booths and more begin at 8:00 a.m.. The leisurely 5k walk through Mesa Riverview Park begins at 9:30 a.m.. Participation is free.
“Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer of women in America, but alarmingly few women see lung cancer as a threat to them personally,” said Julie Reid, Executive Director, of the American Lung Association in Arizona. “The reality is that anyone can get lung cancer, yet lung cancer has been in the shadows for decades. This simply must change. We invite everyone in Phoenix to join us and rally with friends, neighbors and colleagues to raise our voices together against lung cancer.”
According to the Lung Association's Women's Lung Health Barometer, current awareness about the impact of lung cancer in women is extremely low. Even though lung cancer has long been the #1 cancer killer of women, only 1 percent of women named the disease as a cancer that is top-of-mind for them.
Here in Arizona about 1821 women are diagnosed with lung cancer each year, and another1889 lose their lives to the disease. Statistics show that, on average, fewer than half of all women with lung cancer will be alive one year after diagnosis. With one of the lowest survival rates compared to other major cancers, early detection and treatment is key to saving lives. So locally and across the nation, LUNG FORCE educates and empowers patients and healthcare providers, and also raises critical funds for research into better detection and targeted treatments for lung cancer.
The American Lung Association in Arizona offers several resources for individuals and families that have been impacted by lung cancer.
