Orange Fire Department to Climb 531 Steps to Fight Lung Disease

(March 2, 2016) -

EAST HARTFORD, CT –  Eric Auscavitch and the Orange Fire Department are strapping on over  70 pounds of gear to participate for the third time in the annual Fight for Air Climb: Climb 360 State Street on Saturday, March 5. Members of the fire department started participating in the event as a team building exercise and to raise awareness about lung disease and it has now turned in to an annual tradition. The local firefighters will climb up 531 steps.

Fight for Air Climbs are  one of the signature fundraising events of the American Lung Association. The Climbs are held in prominent skyscrapers and other buildings across the country, giving participants the opportunity to join together with friends, family and co-workers as they climb the stairs of the building to the top!. The Climb has been taking place for more than a decade and has raised more than $40 million to support the mission of the American Lung Association.

“The Lung Association is proud to have the Orange Fire Department participating in our Fight for Air Climb in New Haven on Saturday,” said Jeff Seyler, President & CEO of the American Lung Association of the Northeast. “Watching the firefighters climb up hundreds of steps with heavy equipment is truly something to see. We are grateful to the Orange Fire Department for remaining dedicated to helping us spread awareness of our mission to save lives by  improving lung health and preventing lung disease. We hope to continue working with them in the future.”

Auscavitch said he and his fellow firefighters participate in the Fight for Air Climb as way to remind their fellow firefighters that the elements they are exposed to every time they respond to a call can cause damage to their lungs. “We do wear our oxygen masks so we don’t breathe in those toxins, but it does happen and we should be mindful of this,” Auscavitch said.

Registration for the climb will begin at 8 a.m. and the first climber will take off at 9 a.m. The Firefighter Challenge will begin at 11 a.m. To find out more or to register for the Fight for Air Climb go to fightforairclimb.org. or contact Danielle Ferrari at either NewHavenClimb@LungNE.org or 860-838-4371.
