Ontario Native Travels Throughout Northeast to Fight Lung Disease

(August 5, 2015)

Daryl Mallett, of Ontario, Canada, has traveled thousands of miles and steps throughout the Northeast to participate in the American Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climbs in Rochester, Buffalo, Boston, and Bennington Vermont and now in Springfield. The Fight for Air Climb: Springfield will be held Saturday, November 7 at One Monarch Place.

Mallett has been an active firefighter for 20 years and will participate in the Fight for Air Climb: Springfield in full firefighter gear, along with his wife who participates in every climb in the civilian portion of the Fight for Air Climb. Participants in the event will climb 24 flights (528 steps) to raise money to fight lung disease.  Those who would like to join the hundreds of participants expected to participate in this fun yet challenging event can register by visiting fightforairclimb.org.

The Lung Association hosts Fight for Air climbs all across the country.  They attract both elite athletes and novice stair climbers alike.  Participants can choose to race, run, or walk up the stairs.  All funds raised support the Lung Association’s mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education and advocacy.

“I continue to participate in these climbs as a way to stay fit whole raising the importance of having good lung health,” Mallett said.

For Mallett participating in the Fight for Air Climb is much more than the physical challenge. One of Mallet’s co-workers was placed on a transplant list last year. Also, a fellow firefighter was recently diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis, which ended his career.

“I think it’s great that they have these climbs all over the United States. Not only do they help raise awareness about lung cancer among the public, they provide a great way to stay fit,” Mallett said.

The Fight for Air Climb: Springfield is generously sponsored by Monarch Place, Sheraton Springfield Monarch Place Hotel, AMP Radio Network, 94.7 FM WMAS, Sports Radio 1450 A.M The Hall and WWLP Channel 22 News.  An after-party at MVP Sheraton, located inside Monarch Place will immediately follow the event. Those interested are encouraged to register to receive an “early bird” discount of $10 until July 31. Those who register as “early birds” will pay only $25 to register.  Registration will increase to $35 after the deadline.
