University of Hawaii Cancer Researcher Leading Innovative Lung Cancer Trial in Hawaii
(December 17, 2014) -
Honolulu- The American Lung Association announced earlier this week that it has signed an agreement with the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) to help support the Lung-MAP project, a groundbreaking clinical trial in squamous cell lung cancer that brings together multiple partners in research and advocacy to help bring effective treatments to the public.
The Lung-MAP project is unique in its approach. The protocol studies tumor biomarkers in an effort to use genomic profiling to personalize the lung cancer treatment experience. Patients will be matched to sub-studies by their specific tumor mutation, which saves patients crucial research time and effort. In the next five years Lung-MAP will test as many as five to seven potentially lifesaving drugs, slashing the previous research and trial time for other cancer drugs.
Dr. Jeffrey Berenberg of University of the Hawaii Cancer Center is the principal investigator in Hawaii for Lung-MAP. He will discuss the Lung-MAP research protocol during his presentations at the inaugural LUNG FORCE Expo in Honolulu on February 5, a dual-track education event with sessions for both patients and providers. Other messages of hope and progress will come from sessions in current strategies in asthma care and updates in interventional pulmonology. “Lung cancer research has faced numerous challenges, from a lack of funding to the logistical and financial difficulties of getting patients where they need to be to participate in clinical trials,” says Dr. Berenberg. “Being able to collect so much data at once, and test multiple drugs at a time, will expedite treatments to those who need them most and help us in our goal of making lung cancer survivable for everyone.”
The American Lung Association is dedicated to raising awareness of Lung-MAP and its potential as a game-changer in lung cancer drug research. The Lung Association will also lend its support to the creation of an investigator training video and a patient recruitment video and support meetings of Lung-MAP scientific and organizational leadership.
