The American Lung Association is proud to announce Empire BlueCross BlueShield as the presenting sponsor for the 8th Annual Fight For Air Climb – New York City, taking place on Saturday April 14, 2018, from 8:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. at One Penn Plaza. Over 800 participants are expected to walk or run up 55 floors of stairs, or 1210 steps, to the top of the skyscraper. The event aims to raise $220,000 for lung disease research, advocacy and education. Registration is currently open.
“We are thrilled to work with Empire BlueCross BlueShield to make the 8th Annual Fight For Air Climb – New York City our most successful and exciting one yet,” said Jeff Seyler, Executive Vice President of the American Lung Association, Northeast Region. “Our Fight for Air Climbs are a wonderful tool in getting life-saving information in front of individuals and families with lung disease – and as our presenting sponsor, Empire BlueCross BlueShield will help us to accomplish that mission, while reaching more people and growing our community of advocates, survivors and health professionals in New York City.”
“We understand the important role that education and awareness can play in improving the health and well-being of our members and those within the community,” said Larry Schreiber, president and CEO, Empire BlueCross BlueShield. “The American Lung Association helps people live better lives with lung disease every day and we believe events such as the Fight for Air Climb make key contributions towards finding a cure for lung disease.”
Participants are drawn to the event for a number of reasons, including to workout, meet new people or even to pay tribute to a loved one. The Fight For Air Climb - New York City is one of a series of signature fundraising events of the American Lung Association, held in prominent skyscrapers across the country. Fight For Air Climbs attract both elite athletes and novice stair climbers. Participants can choose to race, run, or walk up the stairs. All proceeds from the Fight For Air Climb will directly fund lung disease research, advocacy and education; including smoking cessation programs, COPD/asthma management, and advocacy for stronger clean air standards.
The New York City event will include a short welcome program honoring local LUNG FORCE Heroes, survivors, advocates, health professionals and families. Over 50 firefighters and first responders from throughout the metropolitan New York region are also expected to participate, climbing the stairs while wearing full firefighter gear, weighing approximately 50 lbs.
