Celebrating 30 Years of Cycling to Fight Lung Disease

(June 15, 2015)

Every June since 1985, hundreds of cyclists from the Greater Chicago area ride 150 miles to support the American Lung Association’s mission while enjoying scenic Northern Illinois and the rolling hills of Southern Wisconsin.

This June was no different as more than 150 cyclists celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Fight for Air Ride on June 12-14. Cyclists of all levels and ages rode for two or three days through northern Illinois’ scenic farmlands and Wisconsin’s rolling hills this weekend as part of the American Lung Association in Greater Chicago’s fundraiser event.

Cyclists of all levels rode up to three days for a personal achievement, a new cycling experience, to honor a loved one affected by lung disease or simply to raise research funding for the nation’s number one cancer killer – lung cancer.

At this writing, the Lung Association reports that fundraising numbers $155,000 (and counting). This total will make a big difference in the fight for healthy air and healthy lungs as almost ninety cents of every dollar raised goes directly towards local education, research and advocacy.

A big thank you to the amazing fundraising by all participants and teams. Some of featured teams and individuals raised thousands of dollars. The top three teams and top three individual fundraisers are highlighted below.

  • FITT-RX - $14,290.67
  • Nations Pizza Pedalers - $13,710.00
  • Spokes - $12,631.77

  • Ken Wake: $4,420
    Team: FITT-RX
  • Joe Giglio: $3,700
    Team: Nation’s Pizza Pedalers
  • Vince Nasti: $3,600
    Team: Nation’s Pizza Pedalers

The Association is grateful for the all the support from some of its biggest sponsors, including The Abbey Resort, McHenry County College, Bike Connection, Spokes, Verlo Mattress, Epic Cycle & Fitness, Nestle Waters, and MadeYaLook Photography. Both Illinois and Wisconsin communities helped make this a successful event and we look forward to seeing even more riders hit the pavement next year!
