Brockton Family to Honor Father who Passed Away from Lung Cancer at the Annual LUNG FORCE Walk in Rhode Island

Stephanie Buccieri aims to raise awareness and funding for the American Lung Association through walk at Warwick City Park

(May 19, 2016) -

PROVIDENCE, RI – Stephanie Buccieri, of Brockton, Massachusetts and her family know the pain that comes along with losing a loved one to lung cancer. Buccieri’s father, Ed, passed away in April 2011 at 49 years old. Now, to help educate others and make sure other families don’t endure the same pain,, Buccieri formed “Team Buccieri” to participate in the second annual LUNG FORCE Walk in Rhode Island on Saturday, June 11 at Warwick City Park.

The LUNG FORCE Walk in Rhode Island is a unique, festive event that will make a difference for lung cancer detection, research and cures. With an inspiring signature song and music, participants will celebrate the collective power of their breath while walking for the thousands of women and men in Rhode Island that are diagnosed with lung cancer each year.

Ed Buccieri was a classically trained singer who loved to sing in his local choir and in nursing homes. However, after suffering from an uncontrollable cough and what doctors believed to be pneumonia, Ed was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. Never a smoker, Ed’s family was completely shocked. “We had no idea you could get lung cancer even if you do not smoke. So, there were a lot of what-if’s for us,” Stephanie Buccieri said.

“The Lung Association is grateful to have Stephanie and her family participating in our LUNG FORCE Walk in Rhode Island,” said Jeff Seyler, President & CEO of the American Lung Association of the Northeast. “All too often we see situations like Ed’s because there is such a lack of awareness and funding for lung cancer research. Our LUNG FORCE Walks aim to educate the public that lung cancer can affect anyone; it doesn’t matter if you smoke or not.”

Five years after her father’s death, Stephanie believes he would be proud of her participation in the walk. “We were really blindsided by this. I think he would be happy to know we’re doing something that would help other families to not go through what ours did,” Buccieri said.

Registration begins at 9:30 AM and the walk will start at 11:00 AM. Local sponsors include Rhode Island Medical Imaging, CVS Health, Genentech, WJAR NBC 10, iHeartMedia, and Coastline Medical.
