MEDIA ALERT: Ashley Rivas of Albuquerque to represent the American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE initiative in Washington, D.C. and advocate for sustained funding increases for lung cancer – the #1 cancer killer of women and men

ALBUQUERQUE (March 1, 2016) –

WHO: “LUNG FORCE Heroes” – those personally impacted by lung cancer – are gathering in Washington D.C. from every state in the country. Ashley Rivas will join the American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE in its first Advocacy Day and urge their Senators and Representatives to move forward with robust and sustained federal funding increases for cancer research.

Ashley is participating because of her courageous story fighting lung cancer. Ashley was 33 years old when diagnosed. She is extremely athletic and never smoked. To read more about Ashley’s story please visit, http://www.LUNGFORCE.org/shared-story/ashley-m.

WHAT/WHEN: On Wednesday, March 16th, LUNG FORCE Heroes from across the country will head to Capitol Hill to advocate for robust and sustained federal funding increases for the National Institutes of Health, so there can be better treatments and cures for people with lung cancer.

WHERE: Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.

WHY:

Lung cancer awareness is shockingly low, and LUNG FORCE Advocacy Day is a chance for those affected by lung cancer to share their voices and stories with Members of Congress.

Nearly a quarter million Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year. And, 4 in 5 will ultimately die from the disease.

There is a critical need for more early detection and screening methods - one reason lung cancer is so deadly is because it usually is not found until it has spread.

LUNG FORCE Heroes are gathering to advocate for robust and sustained federal funding for cancer research, so there can be better treatments for lung cancer.

New drugs approved to treat lung cancer and increases in federal funding give hope for defeating lung cancer, but we are just getting started.

Everyone can be a part of LUNG FORCE - the American Lung Association’s fast-growing initiative that is uniting the nation in the fight against lung cancer, the #1 cancer killer of women and men.
