2nd Annual LUNG FORCE Kick-off Honors LUNG FORCE Heroes, Encourages Women to be Health Advocates
(May 21, 2015)
The room was a sea of turquoise at the 2nd annual LUNG FORCE Turquoise Takeover Kick-off reception at Westmoor Country Club in Brookfield. Over 50 guests celebrated Women’s Lung Health Week at the event, hosted by the American Lung Association in Wisconsin.
Kim Schmidt, chair of the Wisconsin LUNG FORCE Women’s Cabinet welcomed guests and introduced two very inspirational speakers – her own 10 year old daughter Olivia, and LUNG FORCE hero Sandy Helmin-Clazmer. Olivia had presented to her classmates on LUNG FORCE, telling them she wanted to grow up to be an adult, mother and grandmother without having to worry about getting lung cancer. Her presentation was voted “Best of Class” by her peers, and she was awarded more than $200 from a school bake sale to donate to LUNG FORCE.
Sandra, a 28-year lung cancer survivor shared a harrowing story of being repeatedly misdiagnosed for lung cancer in her early thirties; after being told by three separate doctors that she had asthma, she finally received the proper diagnosis only after continuing to insist on more testing. Her takeaway message was, “You need to be our own best health advocate.”
Several other LUNG FORCE heroes and their families also attended the event. Guests enjoyed “Turquoise Takeover martinis,” passed hors d’oeuvres and our LUNG FORCE signature “swirl” cookies.
