Be Part of the #1 Fight for Air Climb in the Nation
(February 17, 2016)
Who has the largest, most successful Fight for Air Climb in the nation? Milwaukee! Yes, Milwaukee beats out much larger cities such as Boston, Denver, Los Angeles and Houston. In 2015, over 3100 people participated in the Milwaukee Climb, raising $710,000 to support lung health research, education, programs and advocacy efforts. That’s an increase of over $70,000 from the previous year.
Why does the Milwaukee Climb do so well? For a variety of reasons. First, we’ve had consistent corporate and media sponsorships. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has been our Presenting Sponsor since the very first climb. In addition to their corporate sponsorship, their team raised almost $19,000 last year. In all eight years, they have provided over a quarter of a million dollars in support of the event.
Today’s TMJ 4 has also played a pivotal role in Milwaukee’s success. Besides helping us promote the event to their wide-reaching audience, TV personalities such as Brian Gotter and Steve Chamraz make personal appearances at the event and promote the climb in their daily lives and on-air programs. The news department airs feature stories on some of the most compelling climber stories, touching the hearts of viewers everywhere.
Volunteers – where would we be without them! Literally hundreds of people volunteer the day of the event, assisting with registration, helping out in baggage check, looking up climb times from previous years, passing out medals….the list goes on and on. This is an event that could not survive without our volunteers – the lifeblood of any non-profit organization.
Firefighters. Let’s face it. Some people climb simply so that they can cheer on the 150+ firefighters who participate in the Anthem Firefighter Challenge. Firefighters climb in full gear – up to 80 lbs. of extra gear for the coveted prize of being named the fastest team. Friendly competitions also exist to see which team can raise the most money.
Our dedicated staff also plays a key role – it’s “all hands on deck” for this and other fundraising AND mission events, such as the LUNG FORCE Expo. Wisconsin is blessed to have one of the most dedicated and supportive staffs in the nation!
If you’ve never participated in the Milwaukee Fight for Air Climb, put it on your bucket list for 2016. It’s a once in a lifetime event (although many of our climbers come back year after year to try to beat their time from previous years).
It’s open to all ages and fitness levels, individuals and teams. It’s only a race if you want it to be! Slow and steady is the approach most of our climbers take
