Nearly 20 million Americans suffer from asthma, one of the fastest growing health threats in our country. Even when properly managed, asthma can be life-threatening.  American

Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa Board Member Ravi Chandran and his family know first-hand how devastating asthma can be. Ravi's son, Raghu, suffered a fatal asthma attack in September of 2001. A junior at Naperville Central High School, Raghu had controlled his asthma since being diagnosed at age 5. Raghu had been virtually symptom-free throughout adolescence...until that fateful day.

An Inventory Accounting Manager with Follett Corporation of Oak Brook, Illinois, Ravi became involved with the American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa through his company's participation in the "Blow the Whistle on Asthma" Walk. "It is difficult when I talk about my situation. But this is one way to remember my son, and perhaps make an impact in someone else's life," Ravi said. "I want to make sure that no other parent has to experience a similar hardship." As a Board Member of the American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa, Ravi concentrates on recruiting other corporate teams for the Asthma Walk, and speaking at promotional events.

Over the last three years, Ravi has personally raised over $13,000 to help find a cure for asthma. "I can see how the American Lung Association's research and programs are affecting asthma treatment and management," said Ravi. "Hopefully through our efforts, asthma will no longer be a significant health threat in the next 20 years."
