Jay Kaufman, American Lung Association of Ohio, Northeast Region For more than 17 years, Jay Kaufman has been a dedicated and committed volunteer with the American Lung Association of Ohio, Northeast Region. As a long time asthma sufferer Jay wanted to do something to help fight lung disease.

As a way to support the American Lung Association programs he signed on to help with the Bike Trek and has worked tirelessly since then to grow and improve the event. Jay has participated in 17 cycling events and personally raised thousands of dollars through pledges to support the events. He has averaged $2000 per year for the last 16 years, thus making him the top fundraiser. He has also recruited participation by his wife (Sandy), son (Alex), brother (David) and several friends to raise funds to support asthma programs. In his role as Chairman of the Planning Committee for the Clean Air Challenge, Jay has built the foundation for the event through recruitment of significant in-kind donations, increased corporate support, and high profile involvement of top city and state officials to participate in the event. As a result of Jay's efforts, many corporations made event donations including a variety of food and beverages, the facility for the event, radio and television sponsorship, and fundraising prizes. More than 600 people participated in the Clean Air Challenge in June 2003, which generated $65,000 in corporate supports and pledges, in addition to thousands of dollars in in-kind donations.

"Jay Kaufman is a committed to helping those who struggle to breathe in our community through his fund raising and willingness to speak on behalf of the association. His energy and passion are contagious. He is genuine and really cares about helping others," says John W. Moore, former Chair of the Advisory Board of the American Lung Association of Ohio. "Jay Kaufman is the key to the success of the Clean Air Challenge."
